On this #weirdpride day I’d like to thank some of the people who helped me get through my childhood. Anne McCaffery, Madeline L’Engle,Terry Brooks JRR Tolkien, CS Lewis, Raymond E. Feist, Niel Hancock, & Piers Anthony.
These folks let Me escape. To Pern, Midkemia, Atlanton Earth & the rest.
anyways i get to take some drugs in like 30m so tat they'll kick in by the time work is done and i can stop being a sadsack
happy #weirdpride
Well, happy #WeirdPride night, folks! It's been a lot of fun, in the midst of a difficult time for much of the world.
The What's Happening page has been updated to What Happened, with links to various discussions and writing posted today. Doubtless some stuff got missed!

i guess, in general, if i was to suggest something people look at from me during #weirdpride it would be my writing/art-dump that i just maintain as a free patreon because fuck substack or whatever. @decabill.ca is the bsky for it and the rest can be found through there.
this is not to say that i think #weirdpride is not a helpful thing to do. i just don't know what... the expectation is. i'm always me. once i learned i was wearing masks i just burned them all, if you get me. i'm just always being This but i've never felt *proud* of it because it's just... breathing
the thing ive always wanted is to feel seen and understood, and it's great that i'm doing that better for myself, but it does still leave me feeling astoundingly lonely, in ways that i dont even know that #weirdpride can help with. which feels in and of itself kind of othering, despite the intent
so this is the first #weirdpride @weirdpride.day i've been... present for? and i've been struggling with how to feel about it.
i mean obviously it's lovely. as someone who has been weird for 40 years and not really had the words to quantify it until recently, it's lovely to have a thing like it
happy @weirdpride.day #weirdpride btw
I think it's actually something that's been a major influence on my music, yet I've only just verbalised it 😅 I suppose it's a good way to celebrate Weird Pride Day!

It's my favorite holiday, WEIRD PRIDE DAY!
I'll be spending the day being weird (same thing I do every day, Pinky).
Here's a nice thread of Weird Pride events.
Or, you can celebrate Weird Pride Day by catching up on the Weird Luck webcomic!

Weird Pride Day Part 2:
I'm not someone who typically records videos like this, but this year I felt compelled to add a short, one-take clip about Weird Pride and why it is important.
There is so much more that can be said about #WeirdPride. Check out the #WeirdPrideDay posts for more events!
Society needs to get an *awful lot* better at recognising, understanding and adapting to neurodivergent people's needs (as with other more obvious disabilities of course)
Today is #WeirdPride day which calls for this, and an end to the stigma around neurodivergence

At first I was annoyed at That TES article about autism coming out on #WeirdPride day of all days but actually I've decided that it's the perfect example of antiquated and obsolete thought that we're all pushing back against
Happy Weird Pride Day everyone!

A screenshot from Google Books Ngram Viewer, comparing the trajectories of the terms weird fiction, weird tales, weirdo, weirdness and weird sisters, from 1800 on. 'Weird Sisters' already appears frequently by 1800; its use peaks in the 1820s, and again in 1878, around which time 'weird tales' suddenly takes off. 'Weirdness' is only in use from around 1860, and catches up with 'weird sisters' around 1900, then both decline together for a long time. 'Weirdo' is obscure until the 1960s, and then really takes off along with 'weirdness' around 1990.'Weird fiction' remains a bit of a niche term, but actually overtakes 'weird sisters' by 2020.
Tracking the evolution of the term 'weird' in print.
As I understand it, for a long time it was used almost exclusively to refer to the Weird Sisters in Shakespeare's Macbeth and its antecedents. Then it started being applied to stories, then more and more to people...

Here's the recording of the @lighthousebks.bsky.social Radical Book Fair event on #WeirdPride, unruliness and 'outsider wisdom' with @acaciathorns.bsky.social and @cjdebarra.bsky.social who both had such excellent responses to my questions:

So I chaired a panel at Edinburgh's Radical Book Fair yesterday, about #WeirdPride and unruliness, with two fantastic queer, neurodivergent, nonbinary writers and activists: @acaciathorns.bsky.social and @cjdebarra.bsky.social.
I loved hearing their thoughts on this.

Flyer-style image for the event, 'Divergent: Weird pride, unruliness & outsider wisdom', party of Edinburgh's Radical Book Fair. Date: Saturday 8th November Venue: Assembly Roxy, 2 Roxburgh Place, Edinburgh, EH8 9SU Time: 4.30-5.30pm. The flyer shows the covers of of CJ De Barra's 'Neuroqueer: A Neurodivergent Guide to Love, Sex, and Everything In Between' and 'Significant Others, a collection of texts by Frank Jagoe'. The background shows leaves of gingko, perhaps the weirdest of all trees, and an image of hands cupping a source of ornate smoke.
This year's Edinburgh Radical Book Fair has started!
On Saturday at 4pm, I'm chairing 'Divergent: Weird pride, unruliness & outsider wisdom' with @cjdebarra.bsky.social and @acaciathorns.bsky.social (frank r. jagoe can't attend in person, unfortunately).

To insult them by calling them weird, I mean. Unless it's done very carefully, it reaffirms that 'weird' is an insult: that being different is bad.
