π Western barn owl (Tyto alba) The western barn owl is a medium-sized, pale owl with a distinctive heart-shaped white face, dark eyes, and a mottled silver-grey and buff back. Its underparts are pure white, sometimes with fine dark spots. It has a widespread distribution across Europe, Africa, and parts of the Middle East, favoring open habitats like farmland, grasslands, and marshes, often utilizing old buildings or tree cavities for roosting and nesting. Mainly nocturnal, the western barn owl hunts small mammals (especially rodents) with silent, buoyant flight, using its exceptional hearing and facial disc to locate prey in darkness. It typically emits a characteristic eerie screech rather than a hoot. 2.5 Flash (Edited) Ten subspecies are recognised. Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1) π·: Photo by JensLPZ via Pixabay https://pixabay.com/photos/bird-owl-trunk-feathers-beak-fall-7820338/ KWWB
