Finally working on my #CorsetRevivalProject piece. The plan is to cover it with #embroidery imagery of #ArcticWhaling - where the #whalebone used for support came from. First panel will be a map showing where the whaling took place in the #Arctic around Svalbard and Greenland.

Exploring #DNS4EU a little further and throwing myself back to research I was involved in a while back (https://arxiv.org/abs/2403.05638 surprisingly shows that the #European #resolver shows no problems resolving the sanctioned entities of #RussiaToday and #Sputniknews.

An oversight? I would […]

Another thought about #DNS4EU :

The protective nameserver responds much faster on #IPv6 than it does on #IPv4. Good job, #Whalebone!

Inuit art, also known as Eskimo art, is a vibrant and diverse artistic expression produced by the Inuit people of the Arctic. Historically, it has encompassed various forms like carvings, prints, drawings, and textiles, often reflecting themes of family, nature, spirituality, and daily life. Inuit art is a powerful marker of cultural resilience and continues to be produced and appreciated worldwide.
Traditionally, Inuit art utilized materials from the Arctic environment, including walrus ivory, stone, and other natural resources.
Common motifs include depictions of Arctic animals (polar bears, seals, caribou, etc.), shamanic practices, family life, and the spiritual world.
Ancient Inuit cultures, like the Dorset and Pre-Dorset cultures, produced carvings of animals, human figures, and masks.

The whalebone arch, Whitby, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom, June 2021. Early evening shadows lie on the base of the arch, through which Whitby abbey is visible.

In the 18th and 19th centuries the whaling industry thrived in Whitby. Dozens of ships braved the Arctic seas off Greenland to hunt these elusive leviathans for their lucrative whale oil. Many crews never came back. Whaling was a chance for great wealth for those who managed a successful catch. On a fleet’s return to port, eager onlookers would watch for the telltale sign of good news: Crews would tie a whale’s jaw bone atop the ship’s mast as a sign that they had killed the animal and not the other way around.

Fossilized whale bone - Surry, VA along the James River. From the Chesapeake Group deposits, most likely Baleen whale that lived during the Miocene-Pliocene epochs (2.6-23 mya). This particular hounding spot was my favorite until it was covered in riprap.
