Happy Wednesday!
Today’s #wildflowerwednesday is Springbeauties!
A watercolour painting of a cutting of a plant with small dark green serrated leaves, and three larger five-petaled pink flowers with yellow centres. Several flower buds grow in small clusters from the stems which have prickles growing along all surfaces. To the lower left of the cutting is an illustration of a stem with three round red fruits at the ends. Between the two illustrations handwriting reads “N.C. / 17.VI.06”.
None of the wild roses in Manitoba actually have thorns. They do however, possess prickles. Prickles are epidermal protrusions that are similar to very stiff hairs. Thorns, in contrast, are woody structures that are actually modified branches. #WildflowerWednesday

Just posted again to my blog Habitat Gardening. This time, I cover
🪱Preparing soil for native plants - by not doing hardly anything.
and
🪲Protecting #wildflowers that bloom early - by just relaxing and not ripping them out […]

This is my full draft lifecycle for sunflower broomrape, Orobanche cumana. Last year, Washington State had the first known infestation of this parasitic plant in North America.

Centaurea cyanus
While not originally from Germany, Cornflowers are assumed to have immigrated here through seed in the early Neolithic period and are hence Archaeophytes, which I personally think counts for #WildflowerWednesday
Louisiana Broomrape has special roots that enable it to steal sugar from other plants. Since it doesn't photosynthesize, its leaves are not green, appearing as pinkish scales instead. The species is rare in Manitoba because it only parasitizes native prairie plants. #WildflowerWednesday
Close-up of small white anemone flowers with a purple cast. Their stems are reddish and they have trifoliate, toothed green leaves.
Gray's Anemone (Anemonoides grayi) blooms for #WildflowerWednesday. 💚

The image captures a river bank with wildflowers displaying red flowers. The plants are Cardinal Flowers – a native wildflower that produces showy red flowers in late summer and thrives in marshes and the shores of streams, ponds, and lakes in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. This photo was taken at McCasland Bridge on the Saranac River.

Did you know that in Canada, three-toothed Groundsel can only be found in Manitoba? This rare species can be found in sandy habitats in the province, like the dunes at Spruce Woods Provincial Park. The yellow flowers bloom in spring, attracting small bees and flies. #WildflowerWednesday
Close-up of round, bright yellow buds and blooms atop green stems and pointed leaves. Plant is growing in a forested area among brown leaf duff.
Lovely Laceleaf Sanicle (Sanicula laciniata) blooming earlier this month, for #WildflowerWednesday. 💚

Fairy Slipper Orchid, Calypso bulbosa, is a circumpolar species. This means it grows all across the northern hemisphere, where it can be found in shaded habitats.

The leaves of Woolly Groundsel are covered with a dense mat of long woolly hairs, giving them a greyish-green appearance. It grows on dry prairie slopes, and was named after famous Canadian botanist John Packer, who was a professor at the @https://ualberta.bsky.social #WildflowerWednesday

Closeup of two California Fetid Adderstongue plants with mottled maroon spots on wide green oval leaves. There are long pedicels emerging from the base of the leaves, and have flowers or seed pods at their ends . This plant is in the lily family.
California Fetid Adderstongues blooming in Forestville this week. Their scent reminds me of raw meat, which draws in their fungus gnat pollinators.💚

A watercolour painting of a cutting of a plant. The upright branch has small groups of leaves growing off at regular intervals with small white-pink blossoms near the leaves. Near the base of the plant handwriting read, “N.C. / v. 1910”.
Although the berries of Canada Gooseberry are edible, they can be quite tart if picked too early. When ripe, the berries turn colour from green to reddish purple or black. Animals like bears and birds also like to eat the berries, so you may have some competition for them! #WildflowerWednesday
Close-up of a pale purple-and-white wildflower with raindrops on its petals, set against soft-focus green leaves.
What can I say? I like my Colorado Columbines a little wet and a little dirty. 🤷🏼♂️😅💦

A watercolour painting of the upper portion of a plant. Leaves peel back from a thick stem, and at the top is a cluster of small white flowers. Either side of the painting are small illustrations of the fruiting flower and the tufted seeds. Small handwriting reads, “NC / 27.V.07”.
Arctic Sweet Coltsfoot leaves are said to resemble the shape and size of a young horses’ foot! It’s a large plant with several dense clusters of white flowers. Even in fruit it’s lovely, as each seed possesses long white tufts of hairs to help them disperse in the wind. #WildflowerWednesday

A watercolour painting of two sections of a plant. On the left side it the upper portion, with two clusters, or “heads”, or small yellow flowers. On the right side is the lower portion of the plant, a thick stem interspersed with large green leaves. Between the two sections, small handwriting reads, “N.C. / Feb 1909”. Printing in pencil in the lower right corner reads, “Senecio interjerimus”.
Western Ragwort is a native species with yellow flowers grouped into dense clusters, and leaves covered with long, sometimes cobwebby hairs. Growing in dry prairies in the south, the flowers provide pollinators like bees, flies, and butterflies with nectar in early spring. #WildflowerWednesday

A photo of a patch of parrys gentian flowers from the side with a mountain and blue sky in the background. Parrys gentians are white, tube-shaped flowers with bright blue on the tips of the petals.
#WildflowerWednesday with this cool side shot I got of Parrys Gentian. I love the shape and color of these flowers!
