A hillside covered with dead or dormant bracken ferns; when they froze they turned a bright red. A small evergreen to one side provides contrast. Behind the ferns, yellow-green moss carpets the rock. In the distance, there is dark, misty forest, evergreens in various tones of green, spring-like bright green to deep, dark, blue-green.

A snowy day in Valmont Park, Boulder, Colorado. The day is so overcast everything looks monochromatic. The foreground is a snowy field; about halfway up, you can see undulations in the snow, with some shrubbery outlining the waves. Further back, there is a stark line of snow plastered elm and cottonwood trees. Off to the left, you can see snow covered foothills with dark patches of pine trees. Above it all, the clouds are following the invisible line of more distant foothills. The sky overhead is an oppressive dull light gray.

It's raining again in Seattle, that dull incessant gray light-absorbing sort of day, so I foraged in the archives for a snowy day to brighten things up
