I think Graff making a name for himself at the Garlean military academy means a lot of imperial and provincial hrothgar probably knew who he was at the time, because it was particularly uncommon for non-Garleans to excel like he did.
This would have been like, 35-40 years ago.
His name is P’akal Tia, Pakal meaning sun shield, and he originated from Tural. When visiting Tuliyollal as a kid, he would watch boats sail away from the continent and yearned to adventure outside of his home.

🗡️ : khara’s island sanctuary is a slowly-growing animal sanctuary! it’s mostly for canines and dog-like things that have followed him around on his travels — most notable, cerberus and the shishioji — but also home to a couple critters typically found on the unnamed island.
