#WorldWhaleDay
Fossil evidence shows that #whales’ ancestors once emerged from the ocean & walked on land, eventually returning to the ocean…maybe we’re all headed that way…

My linocut orca whale is leaping out of the water leaving a trail of splashed droplets of water from the sea surface. It’s printed in black on white paper.
My square 8” x 8” print on white washi paper. The upper two thirds are printed as a deep blue-green rectangle with missing unprinted white silhouette of a humpback whale now filled with a linocut print of the humpback in dark blue-grey. The tip of its mouth and tail extend into the white margin space. The bottom third is a grey rectangle with the missing silhouettes of 6 barnacles unprinted in white now filled with linocut C. diadema barnacles with silver striations and orange centres with opercular valves.
Some whale #linocut prints for #WorldWhaleDay! 🧪🐡 I’ve had the great privilege of seeing humpbacks and orcas (& other species) when working at sea. They seem as curious about us as we are of them.
Whales enjoy the surf too! 🐋🌊

World Whale Day one day after World Hippo Day seems well designed. I think the Whippomorpha mammals are now well recognized.
A bunch of us ran off to the oceans to become whales and dolphins. The ones left behind, became the hippos.

Today is #WorldWhaleDay! In the 6th century, one particular whale caused significant problems for seafarers in the Eastern #Roman Empire, under the reign of #Justinian I. Porphyrios, believed to have been a sperm whale, attacked and sank ships of varying size and type over the course of fifty years.

Missed #WorldWhaleDay yesterday so apologies for late posting. Humpback Whales photographed out on the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, located about 6 miles east of Boston and between Cape Ann and Cape Cod. #WhaleWeek @whaletalesorg.bsky.social
Took one of the Whale Watching trips out from Boston a few years ago. Well worth taking this trip. Lots of Humpback and some Fin Whale activity seen.
We do see Humpbacks around the coast of Scotland and some come up the Firth of Forth from the North Sea. Entanglements with fishing gear are frequent though.
Beautiful sight to see so many of these whales in one area.

In 751, a #whale came ashore near #Bangor (Northern Ireland). Its specialty: three golden teeth, valued at 50 ounces each. How were they used? Two were sent to churches for admiration; the third was given to bridge builders as payment by the king’s son.

A digital illustration of an underwater view of a male Norwegian killer whale. The water is deep blue, but a little murky, since it's supposed to be the North Atlantic.
Almost missed #WorldWhaleDay, but here's what I was working on! Of course, I had to draw my fave, the killer whale.

photo of the gallery label: Mary Curran The Raven and the Whale, 2020 Acrylic on canvas Courtesy of the Artist Inuit stories tell of Big Raven, a powerful figure who moves between human and spirit worlds. For example, in a well known tale, he is swallowed by a whale. Inside, Big Raven discovers the shared soul of all living beings, connected through struggle and survival. This painting imagines a lesser known story where Big Raven tries to help a beached whale. Realizing he cannot lift the whale alone, Big Raven asks the Great Spirit for guidance. Strengthened by this aid, Big Raven carries the whale back to the sea.

Today’s #worldwhaleday and I wanted to celebrate that with some concept Fakemon I did a while back (like in 2022).
It was named Glaciyatan and it was a Water/Ice Sperm Whale Pokémon that was based on Icebergs and Livyatan. I might go back to it at some point.

I'm a little late but it's still #worldwhaleday! I haven't gotten out on the ocean in a couple of months so I'm just reposting my last incredible encounter 💜 🦑
