Finished Wretched of the Earth Friday but wasn't able to get on to post about it.
Very good read, highly recommend, but much content warning for trauma and shit.

Took me longer than it should have to understand why Fanon was addressing so-called 'race science' as a legitimate idea. As recently as 60 years ago, when Fanon was writing, people were still treating it as legit and he had to take it seriously to effectifely debunk it.
Only one chapter left.

I get why Fanon included this sketches of his psychiatric patients who became mentally ill do to the war. But this last section on victoms of torture is a bit more than I can handle. This is the closest I've come to DNFing the book. Powered through bc I am so close to the end.

Fanon's discussion of his psych patients is not as heavy as I was afraid it would be re: psychiatric trauma. And I think it's good he included these descriptions and acknowledges how traumatic the revolution is -- for everyone.

I've finished the main text of Wretched of the Earth and am in the additional matter. Given my own history with psyciatry I'm a little leery of reading a psych from over 50 years ago writing about his patients. Potential for trauma triggers is high. I'll try reading the first one & see how it goes.

Read Fanon's discussion on the emergence of a national culture this morning. It's interesting, Fanon being one of the intellectuals whose flaws he is addressing, but I suppose that means he saw everything he described and how it failed first hand.

Reading Fanon's description of the successes of the Algieran Liberation Front and thinking of how he must have felt to see his country fall into dictatorship only a few years after he wrote it...

The way Fanon talks about rural folks is giving me whiplash. Sometimes with the most elitist and condescending language, othertimes taking the piss out of the urban working class for looking down on and not including rural folks and their perspectives in the politics of decolonialising.

Thinking about how Fanon's description of underdeveloped country's governments framing everything in terms of war applies equaly to the US -- 'war on drugs' 'war on poverty' etc -- though for (I think) very different reasons.

I am increasingly glad I read Incarnations before Wretched of the Earth. Knowing about the concrete example of the Indian independence movement is helping so much in understanding Fanon's discussion of violence and negotiations.

My last learning read was a history of India. It's interesting to contrast what I know of the Indian independence movement with Fanon's words on nonviolence as an anti colonial tactic.
Also interesting is the hint of Jungian thought I think I hear in Fanon's discussion of 'The Native.'

Doing my daily reading while exhausted probably not the best idea, but was able ot listen to half of the first chapter of Fanon's Wretched of the Earth.
Fascinating analysis of the relationship between colonized and settler that pulls no punches.

Just read the preface to Fanon's Wretched of the Earth. Sartre is... very Sartre in the preface. It's been 20+ years since I read him, but the style still hits me like a brick between the eyes. Very much 'of it's time' and I wonder what preface Sartre might have written today.
