I try to plan my books out - character sketches, outlines, references. I get stuck in the process.
This morning, I had a paragraph in my head. Wrote it. I’m through 8 pages now and letting the book write itself. Having fun not knowing what comes next.

A wide, atmospheric landscape of a North Cumbrian valley seen through a rain-streaked window. In the distance, the fells are silhouetted against a pale, watery sun, while the foreground shows the hard, industrial lines of a Wigton street. The style is painterly and tonalist, capturing the tension between the enduring stone and the fleeting, damp weather.
Three things I got wrong before writing this book:
The fells are not stable. They are slowly collapsing. The Lake District is not natural. It is managed.
The most interesting poem is probably about Wigton.

I began my art journey painting and doing mixed media in school. Moved onto poetry and music. Wrote In The Mare in college while finishing a degree in language and literate. All music and art ran concurrent to the writing. #newauthor #writingprocess #photography #writer #newbook

A stack of hardcover books with covers in varying shades of green. On top of the stack is a silver skeleton key with a hemp cord looped through the key hole. A text box overlaid on the photo reads: Using Folklore to Create Paranormal Characters. Four steps for developing unique characters while honoring existing folklore:

A path split by doubt leads to 2 certainties: the place you never left, & time you cannot get back.
Paralyzing indecision doesn’t prevent cost.
It trades risk of choosing the wrong road for guaranteed loss of time spent standing still.

Yet I love the writing process so much… AFTER the fact anyways. When I’m in the thick of it… not so much 😅

An atmospheric, painterly scene of a lone dry-stone wall cutting through a desolate, wintry Lakeland valley. The color palette is restricted to greys, deep browns, and muted ochre. The lighting is low and directional, highlighting the geological weight of the landscape and the isolation of February.
Writing principle I keep:
July shows you what a place wants you to see. February shows what it is.
Every poem in this book is the February version.

I don’t advocate for hustle culture but…
If you aren’t exhausted from growing and aiming, are you doing either?

Kind of a boring post today. Focusing on writing today for my comic (or plotting as im trying something similar to the marvel method this time) . Fun to do though.

Here we go. 🚀 I began outlining Peyton's next book yesterday. ✍️📚 I visualize it like a braid, weaving the strands together and sprinkling it with gems (clues).✨🔎 It's anxiety producing, but once the outline is done, then it's time to rock. 🎸🔥

The looming, serrated ridge of Blencathra shrouded in low, heavy mist, captured in a desaturated charcoal sketch style. A single, small human hand presses against the cold, unyielding rock in the foreground, highlighting the contrast between soft skin and ancient, weathered stone.
The Blencathra poem was wrong three times before it was right.
Each draft sounded like fear. The true thing was more specific: fear as a physical lubricant on metamorphic rock.

Edit the draft Tuesday. Then Wednesday. Each pass feels productive. Each pass removes something. By Friday, the piece is safer and it still hasn't been sent.

Macro photography of a weathered slate shard resting in a calloused human palm, the deep mineral fissures in the stone mirroring the tactile lines of the skin. Dramatic low-key side-lighting highlights the grit and texture, rendered in a cold, desaturated palette with cinematic depth of field.
The constraint that made every poem in this book work:
Catalogue the physical forces. Weigh human presence against stone. Only then: write.

This is so relatable!
The worst part of the #writingprocess for me is getting the #firstdraft down before I "lose it"... 😏🤷🏽👍🏽

And so to Friday #WomenWritersNet How has your writing progressed this week? Big wins and little? I'm going with the thought that 'Sometimes I do my best writing when I'm not writing' - little written down but lots of thoughts marshalled!

I dig #stephenking. Seems like a hip cat who #writes great #horror but when he says he doesn't have a #writingprocess I have to shrug. I think he does have a process after all: boldly.blue/stephen-king...
