This book dives into the subject by approaching death as a part of life and nature’s cycle, and exploring how death is treated in various cultures, all in an accessible way for young readers. Overarching concepts range from diseases and scientific discoveries to how it is a universal experience, offering the death of stars as an example. There are also some fascinating spreads about how death is showcased in mythology. The artwork is grand and bold, combining delicately illustrated images into a collage of museum-worthy visuals, lending dignity and vibrancy to the topic. Each spread gently introduces a new concept about death with a few short sections of text, from straightforward facts to quotes to cultural insights. The book ends with pages on handling grief and how to talk about death; these are particularly moving and would make for a good recommendation for young ones dealing with death in their own lives. Overall, this book showcases death in an honorable and realistic way and is an incredibly poignant read. From traveling through the snow to feeling the sand on a beach in the summer, this delightful book evokes every sense of every turn of the passing year. While the entire book flows as a cohesive exploration of the sounds, sights, and feelings of the seasons, each haiku could also stand on its own as a stirring testament to how fast the time flows and the year changes. The artwork complements the poetry beautifully and captures the childlike wonder that is part of exploring the world and soaking it up. The back matter further explains what haiku is while encouraging readers to create their own. TL;DR: writing is complicated. Translating is complicated. Touch-typing may help!
