🧶 I only learned recently that 'spalted' wood is simply wood that's started rotting already, so it gets some interesting patterns from bacteria starting to break it down. This crochet hook was unwittingly made from spalted birch.

🧶 Another larch crochet hook for today. The internet will tell you that the most popular crochet hook size is 5mm, but the ones I've sold were mostly in the 3-4mm range, so I've been trying to make a few more in those sizes. This one is about 3.75mm.

🧶 Elm is also a nice wood for some lovely grain patterns. I used to have an elm in the garden, which sadly succumbed to Dutch Elm Disease, but it left behind a number of badly placed and apparently unkillable offspring, which provide the material 😅

🧶 The other good thing about cherry wood is that it will stay stable even at a smaller size - not all types of wood will. The smallest size crochet hook I've made is 2mm. Not quite small enough for the teeniest tiniest of laces, but hey...
