The date of its founding is unknown. Originally a Yakushido hall, the temple was rebuilt in 1670 by the monk Tetsugen Doko & renamed Zuiryuji. It became a base for the propagation of Obaku Buddhism in Osaka & is commonly referred to as Tetsugenji.

If you're done sightseeing around the Merchant Town, you can use the ropeway to ascend Mt. Hachiman to see Lake Biwa and visit Zuiryu temple at the top. I recommend walking through the temple to truly appreciate Japanese architecture as well as the arts inside the temples.
