It was the blueskybookclub choice for January #AMonthOfDick, which definitely helped me through the peaks and troughs. People still catching up, good luck! ๐๐ณ
I never did grab the annotated edition. Ahhh well, maybe in time for #AMonthOfDick 2028. ๐
I'm really glad January had 348 days this year as it enabled me to finish #AMonthOfDick ๐
๐
So now that #amonthofdick is done (I am sad! I want to do it again!) let me recommend this excellent book: Melville/Ish mentions the sinking of the Essex at one point

I believe the #Pequod resembles this remark. ๐

Goooood morning #AMonthofDick -heads, I hope you start your day with this beautiful footage of Sperm whales I came across while unable to sleep last night. Also - isn't this nicer than whaling?๐

Stewart Mills' #librivox recording of #MobyDick is really quite good

I swear, this is one of the saddest sentences in the entire novel:
"Therefore it was that Flask once admitted in private, that ever since he had arisen to the dignity of an officer, from that moment he had never known what it was to be otherwise than hungry, more or less." ๐ #AMonthOfDick
I'm not joining this time but I did the original #amonthofdick, and: You officially have permission to skip or skim the cetology chapter, there's no Moby-Dick police ๐
Something interesting for folks enjoying #AMonthOfDick who also enjoy SF to read next? I'm curious...
๐
And this one's for the homies following #AMonthOfDick...
๐
Oops. Official hashtag might be #AMonthOfDick! ๐ณ๐
This weekend I started copyediting a novel that can only be described as Lesbian Moby-Dick in Space, and the fact that I read Actual Moby-Dick a year and a half ago with #amonthofdick is proving extremely useful. ๐
See, first go and someone's come up with something better!
I think part of my problem is I think nothing will top #AMonthOfDick and I just give up immediately.
If any ๐ณ๐ Moby Dick fans are interested in doing crowdsourced transcription, fromthepage.com now has "the journal of Hezekiah Starbuck (1749-1830), a Nantucket whaler." ๐ #amonthofdick
acordei no meio da madrugada ansioso com coisas da nenem e pra me acalmar li o capitulo que faltava de moby-dick #amonthofdick
Label from the Metropolitan Museumโs Sleeping Beauties exhibition. The text begins โโIt is the hat that matters the most,โ notes Rezia, the Italian milliner in Virginia Woolf's novel Mrs. Dalloway (1925).โ
Label from the Metropolitan Museumโs Sleeping Beauties exhibition. The text begins โโEveryone knows meditation and water are wedded forever,โ Herman Melville exclaimed in Moby-Dick; or, The Whale (1851), a sentiment echoed in the garments in this gallery.โ
I finally went to see the Sleeping Beauties exhibition at the Met, and I think someone there has been in our #MrsD and #AMonthOfDick reading groups:
Did I buy this beer solely for #amonthofdick? Of course not; that would be ridiculous! I just convinced my wife we should spend a weekend in New Bedford last fall so we could visit the Whaling Museum and then discovered the brewery while we were there. ๐
A reminder that @amndw2.bsky.social is hosting Mrs. Dalloway for July. #HotFrankSummer, #MiddleMarchMadness, and #AMonthofDick will continue to be active, too. The fun doesn't end! ๐

I was saving this for the end #AMonthOfDick, but I fell too far behind. Same with #MiddleMarchMadness. But I managed to keep up with #HotFrankSummer every day, so now Iโm celebrating finishing all three books. ๐ ๐ ๐ฉ
hey I will say if you are at all interested in #MiddleMarchMadness but you fell off during #AMonthOfDick ... from what I have read so far Middlemarch seems like a smoother reading experience than Moby Dick. There's a TON going on and the language is beautiful but it's not as... chunky? As Moby Dick
A normal-sized paperback of George Eliotโs novel Middlemarch resting atop a leviathan-sized hardcover of Herman Melvilleโs novel Moby-Dick.
The most important thing I learned from #AMonthOfDick was the importance of getting a normal-sized copy of the book for #MiddlemarchMadness ๐ ๐
If you were one of those #AMonthOfDick people who liked my Moby Dick thread you have to listen to this episode. It's the law
Hey I had a lot of fun doing #AMonthOfDick in January, and getting into Moby Dick, so for my birthday I'm going to try to do #MiddleMarchMadness ! Comment on Mark's post if you want to join us in reading Middlemarch. No pressure, official schedule in original post.
okay #AMonthOfDick participants! People are still regularly using this hashtag for Whale Content so I think we might need to create a new feed for #MiddleMarchMadness ! So if you are planning on reading along PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS POST SO I CAN ADD YOU TO THE FEED
Forgot to share that my favorite part of #aMonthofDick in Jan was telling a friend Iโd become obsessed with Dick-posting and him thinking Iโd *just* discovered dick pics lololol ๐
Dunno if someone posted this in #aMonthofDick before but if you at all enjoyed MD and like actually exciting history this book is fucking amazing. And the perfect tie-in. And much less of a slog than MD lol. ๐ (Yes the movie sucks, ignore it)
