Acoma Sky City is a historical peublo atop a high mesa in the desert outside of Albuquerque, New Mexico. i've been here twice, enjoying the rich history and spectacular desert views. Until the 1950's, this pueblo was only reachable by horse and donkey up a narrow path that stretched from the desert floor to the village. When Hollywood wanted to film a John Wayne western in the pueblo, the elders agreed under one condition: the film industry pave a road up to the pueblo to make it easier to transport water, fuel and goods to the group of tribal edlers still living in the old adobe homes...without electricity and running water to this day. Deal sealed, filming commenced, and now tourists, and members of the Acoma tribe, can secure transport directly to Sky City, where amazing tales of Native American culture delight and educate.
