"Joan, who could not read, spoke some peasant form of French. Some of the suffering are: it is hard to tell the truth; this is America; I cannot touch you now. In America we have only the present tense. I am in danger. You are in danger. The burning of a book arouses no sensation in me. I know it hurts to burn. There are flames of napalm in Catonsville, Maryland. I know it hurts to burn. The typewriter is overheated, my mouth is burning. I cannot touch you and this is the oppressor's language."

It wasn't Russia Adrienne Rich wrote about (she said so) and she could be writing this now if she were still here with us. Gratefully she left her words behind.

no estaba tomando partido
no tenía opiniones políticas
y si aquí o allá una casa
se llenó de aguas negras atascadas
o envenenó a quienes vivían ahí

Honoring Adrienne Rich—whose powerful poetry and essays explored the politics of identity, sexuality, and power. Her concept of the “lesbian continuum” helped expand how we think about queer connection and feminist resistance. 🌿📖 #AdrienneRich #QueerTheory #LesbianHistory #LGBTQVoices

Poem by Adrienne Rich, titled What Kind of Times Are These

There's a place between two stands of trees where the grass grows uphill
and the old revolutionary road breaks off into shadows
near a meeting-house abandoned by the persecuted
who disappeared into those shadows.

I've walked there picking mushrooms at the edge of dread, but don't be
fooled
this isn't a Russian poem, this is not somewhere else but here,
our country moving closer to its own truth and dread,
its own ways of making people disappear.

I won't tell you where the place is, the dark mesh of the woods
meeting the unmarked strip of light—
ghost-ridden crossroads, leafmold paradise:
I know already who wants to buy it, sell it, make it disappear.

And I won't tell you where it is, so why do I tell you
anything? Because you still listen, because in times like these
to have you listen at all, it's necessary
to talk about trees.
