Columbus needs NWSL team to strengthen economy, encourage girls to sweat | Opinion _**Our children and teens need role models, mentors and influencers to show them what is possible for their lives.**_ By Stephanie Hightower Dispatch Guest Columnist As the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union has put it, for generations, “people… believed it was harmful for girls to engage in ‘strenuous’ activities such as basketball.” Or, as one woman who graduated from high school in the 1950s recalls: “Girls weren’t supposed to sweat.” Fortunately, we’ve learned that a little perspiration can be great inspiration. Columbus and central Ohio stand on the verge of a once-in-a-generation opportunity: landing a National Women’s Soccer League team. Opportunities like this won’t occur passively. They require a community to step forward — business leaders, elected officials and residents alike — and say clearly: Yes, this belongs here. Many pragmatic reasons should drive us to advocate for a women’s team. First, we stand to earn a great return on our investment. Professional teams stimulate local economies by creating jobs, drawing in tourism and game-day dollars and anchoring stadium districts. **Women’s sports in hypergrowth mode** Sports tourism has been a boon for central Ohio, with the Greater Columbus Sports Commission reporting that we’ve gained more than $1.8 billion in revenue since 2002. An NWSL franchise will build on and extend these results. Women’s sports in general have accelerated into “hypergrowth” mode, outpacing men’s sports by a factor of 4.5, according to research by McKinsey & Company. This segment is projected to top $2.5 billion by 2030. The NWSL specifically is on fire. Thanks to a new broadcast deal inked by NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman, women’s soccer will be aired on Prime, ION, ESPN, CBS and the league’s streaming partner, Victory+, this year. **A National Women’s Soccer League team would be a boon for our girls** The league’s last championship game drew a record-breaking 1.184 million viewers. The league recently added two more clubs, and teams are attracting growing numbers of corporate sponsors such as CVS Pharmacy and YETI. Clearly, our community can realize significant, quantifiable rewards with the addition of an NWSL franchise. But let me get real with you. There are more than 100,000 other reasons why we should stand up for this team. Our girls. In my work with the Columbus Urban League, I often explain that young people can only be what they can see. Our children and teens need role models, mentors and influencers to show them what is possible for their lives. If I have never met an attorney, a CEO or an entrepreneur, it becomes very unlikely that I will aspire to any of those leadership roles. And if I don’t see women athletes gaining respect and fans like their male counterparts, I will assume that women’s physical gifts simply don’t matter as much. Setting great examples for our girls represents an investment in human potential that overshadows any financial return. Remember that it was only four or five decades ago — during our mothers’ and grandmothers’ lifetimes — that women were relegated to playing half-court basketball. **It is good for girls to sweat** Ninety-four percent of women in America’s C-suites today were athletes. Sports teach discipline, resilience, problem-solving and teamwork — skills that are invaluable on and off the field. As a young hurdler, I can tell you my path to the Olympics was hardly a straightforward dash compared with male track standouts. I remain indebted and eternally grateful to the coaches who grilled, pushed and occasionally rewarded me for my hard work. They never told me that I couldn’t do what boys could do, or that my sport — my all-consuming passion to run — was less important because of a difference in chromosomes. Throughout those years and later, as an Olympic games track and field team leader who literally fell asleep at 3 a.m. in Athens, Greece, with a phone in each hand, I learned that helping women stretch, build and make the seemingly impossible possible is one of the most powerful ways we create lasting legacies. During my time as chair of USA Track & Field, I saw firsthand how corporate support contributes to an athlete’s — or an entire sport’s — success. We concluded a historic 23-year partnership with Nike, the highest-dollar and longest-term sponsorship signed by any in the Olympic family at the time. It gave new life to the organization and new opportunities to our athletes. That’s why I’m excited to see companies like OhioHealth, American Electric Power, and Huntington support Nationwide’s, Dr. Pete and Dr. Chris Edwards’ and Haslam Sports Group’s efforts to bring the NWSL to Columbus. And kudos to public leaders like Mayor Andrew Ginther and other city and county officials for recognizing how they can help make this dream a reality. As current chair of the World Athletics Gender Leadership Taskforce, it is rewarding to be part of a bold effort to promote awareness and policy changes that give women equal pay, equal play and leadership development opportunities that can transform their lives. It’s a new day. The world is shifting, giving us the chance to uplift young women — and young men. Young men, by the way, are some of the most loyal and devoted fans of women’s athletics.
