It's not just about what we pass on to our kids and grandkids. It's what we leave for those we'll never meet, who may be removed by generations but are impacted by the actions we take today.

As we progress through our modern day and age, we are called to remind ourselves of our role as stewards of the natural world. We belong to the community that Aldo Leopold wrote so much about, the land! 🤗

Happy birthday, Aldo, January 11, 1887. It’s time to rip the narrative away from the brokers, industrialists, extractive sector and developers and restore the soul of humanity.

Aldo Leopold, born on this day in 1887. I should’ve known he was a Capricorn, an Earth sign. 🙂

Extreme close-up of three small sparrows clinging to a hanging green suet feeder with a square seed cake inside. One bird is positioned upright on the top left, one is upside down on the lower left, and the third is on the lower right, creating a dynamic, triangular composition. The feeder is hanging against the rough, textured bark of a tree.

Nina, #AldoLeopold's eldest daughter, retired to the Shack area in 1976, and picked up where Aldo's #phenology notes left off in 1948. Her records showed the impacts of #climatechange on seasonal events.

Our 2026 Phenology #Calendar honors her legacy. Get yours at aldoleopold.org/store.

“When we hear his call we hear no mere bird. We hear the trumpet in the orchestra of evolution.”

When #AldoLeopold penned "Marshland Elegy" in 1937, only a few dozen #SandhillCrane pairs remained in Wisconsin. Thanks to conservation efforts, the population is now 100,000 strong.

The Levee Road btween Portage, WI and the Aldo Leopold Farm and conservation area.

Here's a blurb on the road's history from the Internet.....

History on the levee road in Wisconsin

Levee Road in Wisconsin has a rich history that dates back to the early 19th century when it was an extension of Indian trails that were later widened into suitable roads for ox carts and wagons. By 1829, several wagon roads had been established through southern Wisconsin, including routes for lead miners and military expeditions. The road system was crucial for transportation and commerce in the region, and it played a significant role in the development of the state's infrastructure.

The Aldo Leopold Shack and Farm, located on Levee Road, is a testament to the historical significance of the area. The farm was acquired by Aldo Leopold in the 1930s and is now a National Historic Landmark, offering visitors a chance to explore the landscape that inspired his conservation writings.

I had to climb up a small hill to take the pictures as the levee is a hill of dirt that runs several miles along the river functioning as an environmental protection against rising waters in times of potential floods.

The levee blocks the view of the river, but the small man made hill serves a function of protection for the land South of the river.

This year is lush on the Wisconsin River. This are I stopped at only had a few hardwoods and mostly smaller softwoods, but the growth is very dense and protects the land on the banks of the river well.

We are having an extremely well hydrated and green year in Wisconsin.

I don't paddle, but for those of you who do,the #WisconsinRiver is a beautiful sandy wide river with many sand bars and a thick riparian zone lush w/green.This was the 1st time I drove the #LeveeRd from Portage thru the #AldoLeopold property. BTW, the trek thru Leopold property is drop dead gorgeous.

A tan rectangle graphic with a red border. Along the bottom right, within the border, is a line of silhouetted birds in flight. Text at the top reads: "If, then, we can live without goose music, we may as well do away with stars, or sunsets, or Iliads. But the point is that we would be fools to do away with any of them." At the bottom right, in smaller text, the quote is attributed to Aldo Leopold.

Black and white photo of a young woman crouched in front of a baby pine tree, a shovel propped up in one hand, looking at the camera. Text over the top reads: “Acts of creation are ordinarily reserved for gods and poets, but humbler folk may circumvent this restriction if they know how. To plant a pine, for example, one need be neither god nor poet; one need only own a shovel. By virtue of this curious loophole in the rules, any clodhopper may say: Let there be a tree―and there will be one.” Quote from A Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold.

You might wonder if you can make change. It may feel too complex, too overwhelming, to take the first step. But, as Leopold writes, if you're determined enough, you can make it happen.

Photo of pink-tinged sunset clouds reflected in a river. Text over the sky portion of the image reads: "Two things hold promise of improving those lights. One is to apply science to land-use. The other is to cultivate a love of country a little less spangled with stars, and a little more imbued with that respect for mother-earth - the lack of which is, to me, the outstanding attribute of the machine-age." Quote from Aldo Leopold, The River of the Mother of God.

In addition to ecological knowledge, Aldo Leopold advocated for a deep love of, and respect for, the land. How do you show your own love for the natural world?
