Small bird about 10cm long, sharp beak, green head, black eye with a brilliant white ring around it (which gives it its name), grey bib, white stomach, russet sides, slate blue back fading into a green tail. Bird sits grasping a thin branch with dark feet, and is shown in profile facing left. Surrounding and behind it are more small twigs and leaves nearly the size of the bird.

From today, here's a silver eye/wax eye, or tauhou in Maori. Native, but not endemic. These little ones can often be found in small flocks as I saw on Rakiura and in Curio Bay, and this one was kind enough to hold still long enough for me to get a shot. #Aoraki #MtCook #NewZealand #Photography 🪶
