Silver garden orb weavers, Argiope argentata, hanging in orb web in front of the very spiky coastal cholla cactus, Cylindopuntia prolifera. Male (top) is 4mm (body length), ventral side visible, body brown with 2 eggshell-white markings, 1 on each side, shaped like quotation marks. Female (below) is 24mm (body length), dorsal side visible, body silver, abdomen with dark orange and black markings and fat rounded projections around the outside edge. Both have legs banded with light and dark gray.
After mating the male will try to flee the web, but the female may catch and eat him. Full sequence of mating, with pics: https://www.nps.gov/cabr/blogs/a-day-in-the-short-life-of-the-male-silver-argiope-argiope-argentata-1.htm
I've wanted to get pics of the 2 together for a long time, and was over the moon when I found these. (Still am.) From a late afternoon walk at Calavera Ecological Preserve on November 14.
Good morning from a silver garden orbweaver and her much smaller suitor! (It may not end well for him, but so it goes.)
