We need more such mid rise exemplars of the #architectureofhousing in #auscities
From what I see, inner #auscities way ahead of USA parking ’standards’, which like your apartment rules, seem to be antiquated & inflexible, producing very poor types of #apartmentbuildings.
This is despite your rich traditions of #urbanhousing.
But in recent decades, #auscities have veered dangerously to building multiple tollways - weak & ignorant State Govts duped by greedy toll operators & suss BOOT arrangements.
Many decades of neglect of public & active transport means we are so dangerously car & truck dependent
We could learn so much about urban housing models from places like Iran.
The urban courtyard type virtually nonexistent in #auscities, yet so appealing as type to increase density with amenity
The poison of Casinos in #auscities, almost always on prime public land gifted by witless State Govts to the most nefarious entities, almost always without any semblance of public process, all too often bailed out by successive State Govts despite their pampered status.
This is Brisbane’s travesty
If this land isn't used for medium density housing, given where it is, it's an utter disgrace.
Also shows a government not walking the talk.

👀 I didn't even know we had this happening.
Not very Australian.
#auscities
Newmarket redevelopment in Randwick now nearing completion;
-new park with great playground
-new & connected streets
-heritage
-improved schools access
-a mix of medium & higher density housing by leading architects.
If only this standard was all across #auscities.
Master plan by #batessmart 1/2
We should be leaning from and leaning into the courtyard garden apartments of Europe & Asia.
Medium rise, secure play area for the kids and sheltered gathering spot for all within their walls.
Urban Oases for #Auscities
Lots of interesting notes in here for #auscities such as
#auscities should be Peeps-First not Cars-First.
Planning error.
@chrisbowenmp.bsky.social it would be great to have Clare O'Neill here having discussions on #auscities
They're polite, informed and active. A better form of the community square than we often have.
Love this. The combination of elements within the project to allow the community encased in it to thrive.
Would be great to see this in #auscities
And contemplation of tree tops as they do it - happy making stuff for us primates!
With a city of Sydney’s vast area, & the complex rules & additional costs of towers, mid rise (4-8 storeys) should generally be the default position for increasing density in Sydney & #auscities more broadly.
Towers are an expensive, inflexible type - use them sparingly NOT as default
Interesting - hope #auscities move up the charts
Chronic problem in new over-glazed apartments, especially towers, in #auscities
*Gestures excitedly in roof terrace & Australian colours and build*
Great to see designs that lean into the environment we're actually in rather than trying to pretend we're somewhere cold with snow that needs roofs tilted to shed it..
#auscities
2 apartments/core the key - a disappearing feature in #auscities urban housing.
This guarantees good passive environmental performance, yet Aust 6/core seen as radical, & 10-12/core all too common, meaning bulk of apartments single orientation.
Some people think planning the major break on density… they’ve obviously never had to deal with our ‘service providers’!
Substations imposed on many 20+ dwelling projects, so $300k to budget & decimate your street frontage to their inflexible rules.
No wonder #auscities showcases of poor design…
Betterment taxes essential in all #auscities, otherwise you continue to boost the already wealthy landowners
Yes #auscities a useful hashtag for suitably denser, more compact, environmentally conscious & intelligently designed cities.
Rather than density anywhere, at any cost, we need a complete reset at city making
Yep. And grow green as it grows up.
@philipthalis.bsky.social is #auscities the tag for discussion?
Travis have started using an #AusCities tag to go along with your AusCities feed for relevant post btw
Apparently a radical idea to use Australians wealth to build Australia rather than the UK and US..?
Something we holding superannuation accounts wouldn't like (which is odd, because I'd love it if my funds were used for that + for the return Oz offers..)
