I took this photo of our (Tennessee Tech) Baja car before the Design portion of the competition. It’s a little larger than an ATV, with a black rollcage and wheels, and formed fiberglass body panels. The body is painted red with black and silver accents, with the words “Tennessee Tech” and several small sponsor logos on the side. The number 40 is both decaled on the hood, and bolted to the rollcage with cutout Lexan numbers just behind the driver’s seat. The engine and gearbox sit behind the driver (with a firewall in between), and just above the rear wheels. The car is parked under a tent in our paddock stall, and is shiny and clean having just been polished ahead of our design presentation.
This photo was taken by Tony, our school photographer. I’m driving the car during the Saturday Acceleration event, a 1,000 foot (or so) straight line timed test to see how quick your car can get off the starting line. I’m wearing a white nomex shirt with black gloves, a red and silver helmet that matches the car livery, and goggles as I deftly maneuver the vehicle over the grassy terrain, down a “runway” with logs to either side.
Tony took this photo too, with the whole team huddled together and celebrating after finishing second. We’re wearing matching red and black uniform “bowling” shirts with the school logo, our names, and several sponsors embroidered on them. I’m standing on the left of the group, wearing the white and black Baja SAE hat I got at my first Baja race a month prior (and would wear to every Baja race I ever competed in) and sporting a much fuller head of hair than I do nowadays…
This photo is a bonus throwback to the throwback, I took it in our shop on campus several months before the Kansas race while our 2011 car was still under construction. It’s a close-up of a steel tube located at the lower rear of the chassis, just below the gearbox. I notched it by hand to fit into the frame, and it’s the only tube I ever personally fabricated for any of our cars. I didn’t weld it in though, my welding abilities are only a step above non-existent…
