#BCBudget2026: Deep in Tuesday’s budget documents, the B.C. government quietly scrapped the independent office of the legislature responsible for making sure public service hirings are based on merit.
Senior economist Iglika Ivanova said #BCBudget2026 failed on affordability issues—especially in not replacing the carbon tax rebate for low-income families—and discussed other missed solutions on CBC radio's On the Coast. #bcpoli

The #BCBudget2026 left the NDP government looking adrift, aware things have gone wrong but without a real idea what to do about it.
Instead, they kicked the problems down the road in the hope that something will miraculously happen that makes them go away. @pwillcocks.bsky.social writes. #bcpoli

#BCBudget2026 is out; here's my take:
- gov't is slowing down investment on ⬆️ #LongTermCare capacity (6 projects put on ice). However valid the reasons, it still means even fewer LTC beds (and we're already behind).
- investing in #HomeCare is going to be even more critical because of it...AND...
Ok first read of #BCBudget2026 as a BC mom here:
- Taxes up on lowest income bracket ✅
- $10/day childcare frozen for new families ✅
- Housing slowed ✅
- Long-term care projects paused ✅
I keep waiting for the part where people with the most are asked to contribute the most... Still waiting...
"@marclee.bsky.social, senior economist w/ @policyalternatives.ca, said...that he hopes the budget avoids deep cuts.
“But my sense is that they are talking a particular line around austerity now, but it won’t actually be as bad come budget day,” #BCBudget2026 #bcpoli www.thestar.com/news/canada/...
BC has large deficits. BC also has an unrelenting affordability crisis, growing food insecurity & homelessness, ER closures, schools that can't support kids' mental health & inadequate services in rural areas. Which of these will #BCBudget2026 tackle? #bcpoli
www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/artic...
The BC government says the budget has to be "tough" to tackle large deficits. But we can’t talk about deficits without talking about revenues. And BC’s revenue as a share of our economy is much lower than it was before the deep tax cuts of the early 2000s. #bcpoli #BCBudget2026
As provincial politicians look to trim B.C.’s deficit, their municipal counterparts are worried about the future of a program that helps protect communities from wildfires.
