I then ground the pigments, adding honey as a disinfectant and gum arabic as a binder, to create (slightly gritty!) watercolour paint.

All of the following #benthicinvertebrates were painted using pigments made from the mud in which they live or from sea-shells.

Last year, while scientists conducted experiments, I took some of the sediment and created various pigments by heating it to different temperatures in a furnace. 🧪🦑
