Black cohosh (Actaea racemosa, also called Cimicifuga racemosa) is a tall, flowering plant native to North America.

It grows in woodland areas & has these distinctive tall spikes of fluffy white flowers in late spring or summer. The part used medicinally is the root and rhizome (underground stem), which are dried & processed into capsules, tablets, tinctures, or teas.

Traditionally, Indigenous peoples used it for menstrual discomfort, childbirth recovery, and even as a snakebite remedy. Herbal medicine leans on it for hormonal & nervous system balance, especially in menopause and menstrual disorders like PMDD.

What does it help with?

Can reduce mood swings, irritability, and anxiety during the luteal phase.
	•	May help with hot flashes, night sweats, and sleep disruptions if perimenopause is also in play.
	•	Can ease tension headaches and some types of menstrual pain.

Extra note for ND folx: By gently modulating estrogen activity, it can help stabilize neurotransmitters like serotonin & dopamine, which can be extra sensitive in AuDHD brains during hormonal dips.

For neurodivergent folks with PMDD, daily use can sometimes work better because it smooths the transition into luteal rather than trying to catch up after symptoms start. But if you’re sensitive to supplements, luteal-only might feel safer to test first.

I take this supplement daily in the mornings. It’s especially helpful for perimenopause too! You may not know, but peri starts in the mid-30s! Often goes unnoticed 😉
