At the center of the galaxy Markarian 501, there appears to be not just one supermassive black hole, but two. Radio observations over several years suggest that the duo could merge in as short as 100 years. www.popsci.com/science/blac...

Record-Breaking Neutrino May Be Linked to Exploding Primordial Black Hole In 2023, scientists observed a neutrino hitting Earth with an energy level far beyond any known natural cosmic source, about 100,000 times greater than the output of the Large Hadron Collider. Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst propose that this extraordinary particle may have originated from the explosive death of a quasi-extremal primordial black hole (PBH), a rare type of black hole theorized to form shortly after the Big Bang. Unlike regular black holes, these PBHs could carry a mysterious 'dark charge,' emitting intense bursts of energy and potentially revealing previously unknown particles, including candidates for dark matter. The team’s study, published in Physical Review Letters, explains how this event aligns with predictions for neutrinos generated by PBH explosions. Interestingly, only the KM3NeT detector observed the event, while IceCube did not, suggesting that such PBHs may be rare or have selective emission properties due to the dark charge. The findings could provide crucial insights into Hawking radiation, the fundamental structure of the universe, and the elusive nature of dark matter. If verified, these observations may open new pathways for discovering both known and hypothetical particles beyond the Standard Model.

Astronomers Observe Unprecedented Long-Lasting Gamma-Ray Burst with Webb Telescope Astronomers have observed an extraordinary cosmic event, GRB 250702B, that challenges current understanding of stellar explosions. Detected by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope along with a network of global observatories, this gamma-ray burst lasted an unprecedented seven hours, far longer than typical bursts that usually fade in less than a minute. The event exhibited unusual X-ray activity even a day prior to the main burst. Observations from instruments including China's Einstein Probe and the NSF's Very Large Array revealed extreme properties suggesting multiple possible explanations, including an unusually intense gamma-ray burst, a tidal disruption event by a massive black hole, or a smaller black hole merging with a stripped helium star. The burst emitted powerful jets of energy and was so intense that it required a combination of space-based and ground-based telescopes to fully capture its gamma rays, X-rays, infrared light, and radio signals. Hubble and Webb imagery identified the event’s host galaxy about 8 billion light-years away, with complex structures and dust lanes. Despite extensive observations, researchers have not reached a definitive conclusion about the origin of GRB 250702B, making it a rare and significant event that could reveal new insights into black hole and star interactions.
