The female flowers have a bit smaller petals, but already before pollination they have tiny gourd-like bodies like in this pic. If the flower gets pollinated from a male flower blooming at the same time, the female flower grows into bottle gourd, if it doesn't get pollinated, it dies and falls off.
The first female flower! 😍 But there is no male blooming this time... Each flower is blooming just for a night (opening on evening and gone by midday the next day). That's quite a short window for pollitation.

Bottle gourd (lagenaria siceraria) plant vines tangled together. The biggest shoot has already found strong support and reached out its' vine to the smaller shoot still looking for a firm support. Truly admirable how strongly they are holding together.

Picture shows a single, mostly white flower of edible bottle gourd. It produces and flowers heavily. It seems to be resistant to squash bugs as well. It bears LARGE tender fruit but the longer they sit after cutting, they still have seed development so use them ASAP or just core them if they've been sitting a few days. Always peel them.
Among the last flowers we had before the hard freeze was edible bottle gourd (milk gourd, lauki, slaoui, cucuzza, etc.) It really did well for us. Once it starts flowering and producing fruit, it REALLY takes off. The flowers are about 3" across and quite nice.
