The most recent example of these #EdinburghRugby defensive issues is from the game just gone against #BrythonThunder in Rd 7, where they scored to take a 32-26 lead in the 75th minute but went on to concede two tries in 5 minutes and ultimately lost the match.

#EdinburghRugby have been inconsistent with their attacking output this season but scored their highest 'attacking effectiveness' score of the campaign over the weekend against #BrythonThunder despite losing the game.

Caveat: this scoring system is still a work in progress and is being tweaked!

Just caught up with the #EdinburghRugby game at #BrythonThunder from the #CelticChallenge earlier today (some of these KO times are too early for me in my time zone ๐Ÿ˜…).

Will post a thread about it in the next couple of days!

A thread about #GlasgowWarriors at #Clovers will follow shortly after.

So #EdinburghRugby did well enough in the first half, managed to hang on, and saw off the #BrythonThunder comeback in Rd 3 to secure the victory despite a shaky second-half performance.

What happened in Rd 4 away to #Clovers ? How did they end up with such a low attacking effectiveness score?

#EdinburghRugby struggles to gain field position can be illustrated by Zone Exit %, which measures how efficient a team is at advancing from one field zone to a zone further up the field.

Edinburgh's and #BrythonThunder 's fortunes in this metric more or less swap in the 2nd half.

#BrythonThunder kicked more in the 2nd half & used a greater variety of kicks to keep #EdinburghRugby pinned. Of note is the 4x they kicked after 2 or more passes, sucking in the defensive line before kicking into the space left in behind and an increase in returned kicks from the backfield.

#EdinburghRugby struggled to maintain the positive and dominant carries from the 1st half and could have turned to their kicking game, which had proved effective in the 1st half & previous round. Ultimately, they kicked less than the 1st half, allowing #BrythonThunder to keep applying pressure.

In the 1st half vs #BrythonThunder, #EdinburghRugby enjoyed very similar average field position to Rd 1. However, in the 2nd half they struggled massively to get into the opposition's half.

Pressure mounted, confidence dropped, mistakes compounded, and they allowed a comeback to be launched.

We can see #EdinburghRugby were massively effective in attack in Rd 1, but have steadily declined since then.

So what's gone wrong?

To answer that, let's start with the average field position in Rd 3 against #BrythonThunder .

If you're wondering what's been going on with #EdinburghRugby women in the #CelticChallenge, then this thread is for you!

Edinburgh haven't lived up to their convincing performance in Rd 1, hanging to survive a 2nd half comeback from #BrythonThunder and falling well short to #Clovers in Rd 4.
