π Yesterday, we carried out our first joint initiative with the Institute of Zoology of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan: a workshop on power lines and birds, with a special focus on the issue on bustard collision with powerlines.

On last Friday we went out to the desert to look for Asian Houbara #Bustards.
Unfortunately there was no Bustards, but a stunning Hoopoe #Lark in courtship display was a nice compensation...

During breeding, the whiskers on the chin of the male Great Bustards gets very long and bushy. Check out the muttonchops on this dude. I wonder if he waxes that. π Meanwhile his buddy is primping up his tail feathers for the disco tonight. πΊπ #BirdingHungary #bigbirds #bustards
Another sign of spring. Saw a group of 14 βοΈ Great #Bustards (Otis tarda) today and one of them was in display mode. This is only a partial display. When they go full bore, they turn all their feathers inside out and you can't even tell it's a bird. Looks like a white haystack. π #BirdingHungary
More Great Bustards (Otis tarda). In Latin, "tarda" means slow (that's where the word tardy comes from) so I decided to give these guys a double shot of Starbucks espresso ββ to speed them up a bit! π #BirdingHungary #bustards #bigbirds
Portrait of a male Great Bustard from today. The males are much larger than the females and have a much thicker and paler neck. The north part of the KiskunsΓ‘g is very reliable for this species right now. #BirdingHungary #bustards #bigbirds
Phonescope video of a few of the Great Bustards (Otis tarda) I saw this afternoon. Watching these big boys is a great way to spend a Sunday! π #BirdingHungary #bustards #bigbirds
Phonescope video of two distant Great Bustards in the fog and snow. These two were having some sort of confrontation. Not sure what it was about, but the one on the left eventually backed off. π #BirdingHungary #bustards #BigBirds
Okay... take ten paces, turn and fire! This pair of Great Bustards (Otis tarda) looked like they were having a duel. π Standing back to back and then walking slowly away from each other. #BirdingHungary #bustards
One more Great Bustard phonescope vid from the weekend. I filmed this one because it appeared to have a bit of a limp. The right leg or foot seemed to be bothering it. #BirdingHungary #bustards #bigbirds #birdsofthepuszta
One more Great Bustard flight shot from yesterday. #BirdingHungary #bustards #bigbirds
Phonescope video of some of the Great Bustards from this afternoon. One of them looks up as if to say, "Hmm.. is that that birder hiding in a bush again? I wish he'd give it up." π #BirdingHungary #bustards #bigbirds
I was lucky today when a group of Great Bustards (Otis tarda) did a flypast and then landed relatively close. I think it helped that I was hiding in a bush... skulking around like birders do. π I guess the Roe Deer in the background is doing the air traffic control. π #BirdingHungary #Bustards
Two of the 64 Great Bustards (Otis tarda) I saw today. #BirdingHungary #bustards #bigbirds
Not too many Great #Bustards apparent today in the north KiskunsΓ‘g, but we did have a pair in a reasonably close flyby. #BirdingHungary #BigBirds
A vector Illustration of a Great Indian Bustard around the Letter G. Below the letter, is the English and Latin name of the bird as well as its iUCN status which is Critically Endangered.
Day 7 of #Birdtober is the Great Indian Bustard!
One of the heaviest flying birds, clocking in at between 15 - 18 kg , they are also very rare with maybe 150 individuals still alive today :/

between moving, cleaning, and local internet ups and downs, I entirely missed @KateShaw 's new episode on Namibia's Skeleton Coast!
featuring several interesting animals.

Another portrait of a Great Bustard (Otis tarda). Lately it has been a Bustard Bonanza in KiskunsΓ‘g National Park with birds showing up all over the place. #BirdingHungary #bustards #BigBirds
Short video of some of the Great Bustards from today. These two figured I wasn't worth the effort of flying, so they just casually strolled away. π #BirdingHungary #bustards #BigBirds
Saw quite a few Great Bustards (Otis tarda) today. Sometimes they fly and sometimes they just walk away. π #BirdingHungary #BigBirds #bustards
Short phonescope video of a few of the 95 Great Bustards (Otis tarda) I saw yesterday. Getting spruced up for fall. π #BirdingHungary #bustards #birds #BigBirds
Sometimes Great Bustards (Otis tarda) can be hard to find. Not today. This morning, they were lining up to get their photo taken. I told them I was going to make them famous, and they were like, "Really? Oh boy! Let's do this!" π #BirdingHungary #bustards #InglouriousBustards #BigBirds
Just a few Little Bustards (Tetrax tetrax). π At Shirvan, seeing single flocks of 5,000+ birds was breathtaking. #birds #birding #bustards #Azerbaijan
To see Great Bustards (Otis tarda) is hard this time of year. Crops and grasses are very high so they have lots of places to hide and the heat makes them inactive. I was lucky the other day when a flock of 9 birds flew past me. #BirdingHungary #birds #bustards
Gull-billed Tern Β© Inglorious Bustards
Whiskered Tern Β© Inglorious Bustards
Whilst watching two glorious displaying Little #Bustards this Gull-billed #Tern drifted right through our field of view!
Inland waterways also held glorious Whiskered #Terns drifting over a myriad of #Shorebirds as masses of Greater Flamingoes painted the lake pink!π

π Kori bustard (Ardeotis kori) The kori bustard, Africa's heaviest flying bird, is cryptically coloured with brown and grey plumage, black and white markings, and a prominent black crest. Its distribution spans two main regions in Africa: eastern (Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania) and southern (Angola, Namibia, Botswana, South Africa). Primarily ground-dwelling, Kori bustards are wary and prefer running to flying. Males perform elaborate courtship displays, puffing up feathers and making booming calls. They are omnivorous, consuming insects, small vertebrates, and plant matter. Two subspecies are recognised. Conservation status: Near Threatened (IUCN 3.1) π·: Photo by BldrJanet via Pixabay https://pixabay.com/photos/bustard-bird-botswana-grass-nature-9438080/ AQSH

Another flight shot of a Great Bustard (Otis tarda). Relatively easy to find now, but in late May / early June when the crops are high, it will be much tougher! More places to hide! #BirdingHungary #birds #birding #BirdsSeenin2025 #bustards #InglouriousBustards
