Merck to Acquire Terns Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Expanding Its Hematology Pipeline With TERN-701, a Novel Candidate for Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) Merck (NYSE: MRK) agreed to acquire Terns Pharmaceuticals for $53.00 per share, valuing Terns at approximately $6.7 billion (about $5.7 billion net of acquired cash) with an expected close in Q2 2026.The deal adds TERN-701, an oral allosteric BCR::ABL1 TKI in Phase 1/2 for certain CML patients with prior TKI exposure; TERN-701 has FDA Orphan Drug Designation (March 2024) and showed encouraging molecular responses by week 24. Merck expects a ~$5.8 billion charge (≈$2.35/share) in Q2 and full-year 2026 results; the transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory clearance.

Little Tern, diving

Sadly the little Tern is an endangered species of tern. They migrate here (Ireland) in late April from Western Africa. They are ground nesting birds, and nest on beaches and dunes.

Its body is mostly white with a black cap on its head. and a red-orange bill. The underside of the wings are in shadow, so it is difficult to make out the color.

A tern mid dive into the sea. I couldn't decide if the air or the water was in fact their element, so the alt seabird was a welcome relief!

The Inca Tern is listed as Near Threatened on the official IUCN Red List site due to a decreasing population trend. It is native along the coasts of Peru all the way south to Central Chile. It breeds mainly on cliffs and islands in appropriate holes or cavities. This tern feeds (in large flocks) mainly on fish such anchovies, mote sculpin and silversides whereby it requires on coastal upwelling to bring the food from the Humboldt current (it will also consume invertebrates). It dives into the water to catch its prey. The population fluctuates regularly due to storms and El Niño events (which reduce the anchovies -its favourite food source). This is a special bird as it is the sole member of the Larosterna genus (Larosterna Inca).
