Red Maids (Calandrinia menziesii) get their magenta hue from betalain pigments—found only in the plant order Caryophyllales and some fungi. These are the same pigments that give beets their deep red color!

Western Redbud (Cercis occidentalis) is a nitrogen-fixing legume with cauliflory—flowers bloom directly on trunks or stems. Cacao (Theobroma cacao) does the same, producing the beans for chocolate.

Picture of a blooming Lupinus with an arrow pointing at the flowers with dark pink tips and a message that says “pink means: I’m already pollinated, don’t waste your time” and then another arrow pointing to flowers with white tips that says “yoo hoo, I need a little insect love!”

Two mason jars of Arctostaphylos glauca seed in water. One jar contains seeds with the fruit removed and one had the fruit intact.

Years ago I was roasting bigberry manzanita nuts to break dormancy and thought it smelled good and wanted to try roasting it like coffee. I'm trying one batch with anaerobic process and one washed process.

Happy to hear any recommendations!
