the one-two punch of #CancelColbert and #OscarsSoWhite was simply too much for the minds of american elites to handle
#CancelColbert
You kids don't remember, but a long, long time ago they came for Stephen
would be sort of interested in a publication tracking down Suey Park from the 2014 twitter #CancelColbert incident for commentary on recent events
I’ve read more breathless column inches about Suey Park getting #CancelColbert trending about a joke he made on his old cable show than I’ve heard about Colbert’s broadcast show actually being canceled under government pressure
Turns out the #CancelColbert people won after all
Anti-racist critics created the #CancelColbert hashtag and now the right wing literally got his show cancelled.

Whether it’s a random Twitter activist starting the #cancelcolbert hashtag circa 2010, or a secret CBS merger deal in 2025 approved by the Trump admin actually cancelling Colbert, both sides have been trying to Cancel Colbert.
I’m sure it’s been said, but I haven’t seen anyone remark that the Colbert cancellation is an interesting full-circle moment insofar as #cancelColbert was the original use of “cancel” in the “cancel culture” sense back in 2014.
Before CBS literally cancelled Colbert, our Roving Philosophical Reporter looked at the original #CancelColbert: youtu.be/3k7_w4EVKls?...

Finally got him #CancelColbert
They canceled Colbert. Who’s next? When comedians get silenced, democracy gets bruised. Satire isn’t dangerous — it’s essential. Let’s make noise. Let’s protect our voices. 📣

I can't believe Suey Park finally managed to #CancelColbert
WHAT YEAR IS IT #cancelcolbert
The hashtag finally worked, huh? #CancelColbert
I guess the #CancelColbert finally panned out eh
Does anyone remember Suey Park and #CancelColbert. I remember it being one of those mid-00s things that made wokeness look silly as alt right stuff was ascending, not to blame but didn't help.
Anyways, here we are.
Now seems like a good time to ask: when did we start using the word “cancel”?
Because the first time I heard it was in relation to Stephen Colbert. He made a racially insensitive joke and people started tweeting #CancelColbert —in the sense of literally cancelling his show.
Screenshot from "The Colbert Report - Who's Attacking Me Now? - #CancelColbert", with the caption saying "BUT FOLKS, I'M STILL HERE!" "The Interwebs nearly swallow Stephen whole after the dark forces of Twitter descend on The Report." "About The Colbert Report: As America's most fearless purveyor of 'truthiness,' Stephen Colbert shines a light on ego-driven punditry, moral hypocrisy and government incompetence, raising the bar for political satire."
History does not repeat itself,
but nobody can't say they didn't see it coming.

"went viral" in 2014 ...

CBS's decision to end "Late Show with Stephen Colbert" is a testament to the power of hashtag activism. It took 11 years, but Suey Park finally got to #CancelColbert
Big moment for Suey Park #CancelColbert
As I remember it, the #CancelColbert firestorm of 2014 helped popularize the term "cancel culture," which then fueled a moral panic that propelled the fascist right, which is now the force that seems to have actually canceled Colbert. Am I getting this right? www.newyorker.com/news/news-de...
Remember when we never used to use the word cancelled in regards to people before someone on Twitter suggested #CancelColbert talk about a long game
Damn I guess the #CancelColbert people couldn’t let it go after 11 years
