A very large earthen motte with a ruined tower built into the right hand side, and another section of stonework at the top just left of centre. It is a grey, winter day.

It is hard to convey the sheer scale of some earthworks in a photo, but this old shot of #ClunCastle has a good go. The works began with a simple motte and bailey soon after the conquest, though the Great Tower (pictured) is prob. early 14th century. #MotteMonday #Castles #Shropshire

Ruins of Clun Castle, Shropshire, along with the town’s medieval bridge. Castle likely dates back to late 11thC. Although it was attacked more than once, by the early 14thC it was redundant, with the extant ruins dating from this period.
