These are captive male ruffs. They both have their breeding plumage which shows their shaggy ruffs that can occur in a variety of colours. This is naturally a shorebird that consumes invertebrates in wetland habitats. Males will naturally gather in 'leks' to display to females.

The #BirdOfTheDay main theme is #WinterSurvivors and I want to show this slightly older #drawing based on my own #photography of these #fighting #redwings. The drawing was done (I think) at the beginning of last year, however the photographic references were taken in 2018 when there was an anticyclone called Hartmut (Beast from the Easy) that hit the UK in late February of that year and was a big killer of many wintering birds. It brought unusually high levels of snowfall and cold temperatures. We did our best to feed as many birds as we could with normal bird feeding food as well as supplemental fruit for the many thrushes. Sadly, many lapwings were killed in this cold wave.
