The first “Little Egypt”—Fahreda Mazar Spyropolous (d.1937)—appeared at the Chicago World’s Fair in ‘93. She danced the sensational “couchee–couchee” or “tootsie–wootsie,”—now belly dancing. Despite #Comstock, she became a celebrity & a regular attraction at Coney Island.
The court rebuked #Comstock & the judge wrote that it was
“… very difficult to see upon what theory these world-renowned classics can be regarded as specimens of that pornographic literature which it is the office of the Society for the Suppression of Vice to suppress.
In ‘94, #Comstock also tried to block the sales of classics, including “The Arabian Nights”, “The Decameron”, & “Tom Jones”. The court let the sales continue. It made a distinction between “high” art & “low” #pornography—the first time a U.S. court used the word “pornography”.
Foote deleted all the information about #BirthControl from the book. Instead, he promoted the first birth control pamphlet in the U.S. He called it “Words in Pearl for the Married.” #Comstock entrapped him & Foote had to pay a $3,500 fine plus $5,000 in costs.
