...aviatrixes & their fight to become astronauts. After that, I'm starting #ConsiderPhlebas. Do you have any recommendations for my list?
Latest read. It was entertaining as a distraction from terrible world events, but I think once one has the read the Expanse series, all other epic space adventures will likely pale in comparison...hahaha

This week, I read #ConsiderPhlebas by #IainMBanks. It’s a #spaceopera that’s equal parts adventure, comedy, and cynical tragedy. I loved it.

The most immersive world building I've ever experienced. I look forward to taking an immense amount of inspiration (stealing) from this series.

A comic book style illustration of Iain M. Banks sipping scotch and thinking about characters from his novel Consider Phlebas.
XOXARLE: I am reminded of one race [the Fanch] who set themselves against us…Their conceit was that the galaxy belonged to them because their water god was supposed to have made the galaxy in their image.
AVIGER: Never heard of them.
X: No, you wouldn’t have. We annihilated them.

It’s World Book Day! I love reading and I’m currently reading “Consider Phlebas”, by Iain M. Banks. The first of a 9 book SciFi saga within The Culture Series. I have read them all before and it’s a joy to get back into!

Consider Phlebas, the first novel in Iain M. Banks' classic Science Fiction series "The Culture," is being developed as a series by Amazon. / #ConsiderPhlebas #IainMBanks
"Captain," Xoralundra said briskly, "in this war there have to date been fourteen single-duel engagements between Type 5 light cruisers and Mountain class General Contact Units. All have ended in victory for the enemy. Have you ever seen what is left of a light cruiser after a GCU has finished with it?" "No, Querl." "Neither have I, and I have no intention of seeing it for the first time from the inside. Proceed at once." Xoralundra hit the helmet button again. He fastened his gaze on Horza. "I shall do what I can to secure your release from the service with sufficient funds, if you succeed. Now, once we have made contact with the main body of the fleet you will go by fast picket to Schar's World. You will be given a shuttle there, just beyond the Quiet Barrier. It will be unarmed, although it will have the equipment we think you may need, including some close-range hyperspace Spectrographic analyzers, should the Mind conduct a limited destruct."

We really should pay more attention to science fiction...

Excerpt from Iain M Banks Consider Phlebas (book 1 of The Culture series): Stafl-Preonsa Fal Shilde 'Nseestra dam Crose survived another serious climbing accident, continued to out-guess machines millions of times more intelligent than she was, changed sex several times, bore two children, joined Contact after the war, went primitive without permission on a stage two uncontacted with a tribe of wild horse-women, slaved for a dirigible Hypersage in a Blokstaar airsphere, returned to the Culture for the drone Jase's transcorporation into a group-mind, was caught in an avalanche while climbing but lived to tell the tale, had another child, then accepted an invitation to join Contact's Special Circumstances section and spent nearly a hundred years (as a male) as emissary to the then recently contacted Million-Star Anarchy of Soveleh. Subsequently she became a teacher on an Orbital in a small cluster near the lesser Cloud, published a popular and acclaimed autobiography, then disappeared a few years later, aged 407, while on a solo cruising holiday on an old Dra'Azon Ring.
Started a reread of Iain Banks Culture series and came across this gem in the appendixes of "Consider Phlebas".

A sentence went round & round the inside of his head like a marble spun inside a jug:
"The Jinmoti of Bozlen Two kill the hereditary ritual assassins of the new Yearking's immediate family by drowning them in the tears of the Continental Empathaur in its Sadness Season."

Since this is a new platform I guess I should also post here that I don’t know why folks are blowing hundreds of millions of dollars making garbage like House of the Dragon or whatever when Iain Banks’s Culture novels are just sitting there.

Is there any news on a new attempt to bring Iain M. Banks' Consider Phlebas to our screens? I've always thought it would be great, especially with my imagined Death in Vegas, and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross soundtrack.
