For today’s #birdweek2026, my favorite Spectacular Seabird is the Killdeer. When they feel their nest is threatened, they put on their signature broken wing display in efforts to lure away any lingering predators.

It’s #birdartweek2026 with Cornell Birds! Cedar Waxwings look like something out of a fantasy book, which is why I picked them as my “whimsy” bird. I’ll miss these guys when they leave us for spring.

"Kate, what did you accomplish on your work trip?"
(looks happily at all the new birds in Life List) "Uh..."

Stepped outside to large group of #CommonGrackle in the trees so I put out some bread to see if I could get a count. The numbers continue to grow!

This afternoon I restored some of my inner peace by sitting outside and listening to birds. The Merlin Bird ID app is so much fun to explore!

Grey Heron, Qatar
Grey Heron, Qatar
Back on my heron theme:
Here is another rare Qatar visitor. A Grey Heron.
This was in May when the temps here are well into the 40s (over 105F)!
Check out his tongue. He was def stressing.

So jazzed to find this guy plucking crabs out of the marsh.
Striated and Black Cap Herons are rarely seen in Qatar.

A Siberian Stonechat spying insects
Found this cute Stonechat as it hunted insects in thick brush.
These guys love wintering in Northern Africa and the Arabian coasts. They’re rapid, insanely accurate insect gatherers.

Eurasian Marsh Harriers at play.
One of them, sadly, tampered with by a human. You can see a rope on the legs of the younger harrier. It was either being trained to hunt or had escaped.

Bar-Tailed Godwits are an amazing, near-threatened species that travel thousands of miles *in one shot* from their breeding sites in the Arctic all the way down to Africa and the Arabian coasts this time every year.

Wagtails are some of my favorite birds, their distinctive flight and ground movements. A real joy to watch them tracking down and munching on bugs. Here, a White Wagtail enjoys splashing waves and a rare cool breeze here in Qatar.

Black-Winged Stilts are fun to shoot, often very obliging. Even better, when they hit the air, you can hear them coming for miles.
