Was wondering why there was absolute silence in the backyard, I walked out and saw this beauty perched on the tree!

A Cooper’s Hawk in the Old Woods The first sign was sound, not sight. For most of the past week, my ears and Merlin ID had been catching what sounded like a Cooper’s Hawk somewhere in the neighbourhood. I could hear it clearly enough, but I could not place it. The call would arrive, and then the bird would be gone, or at least invisible. Yesterday I opened the sliding door to the balcony on the other side of the house — I wanted to give Sir Alphonso Mango a few minutes of fresh air — and almost immediately heard that distinctive call again. I looked up, expecting to see something overhead. Nothing. The call came again, and this time it seemed to come from the small wedge of old trees across the road, between the tennis courts and the townhomes. A stream runs south-east to north-west under that canopy. It is a haven for small birds, which means, of course, that it is exactly the kind of place a Cooper’s Hawk would find useful. I ran inside, grabbed the Fujifilm X-T3, attached the Fujinon XF150-600mmF5.6-8 R LM OIS WR, and headed out to the driveway. I was still wearing my house shoes. The hawk kept calling. I kept pacing, cocking my head, scanning the upper branches. Some school children walked past watching me. I probably looked odd. After a few minutes I finally spotted it — perched high and still, looking back at me with what I can only describe as mild indifference. Cooper’s Hawk (Astur cooperii) · Thursday 19 March 2026 FujiFilm X-T3 · ISO 12800 · 1/500 sec XF150-600mmF5.6-8 R LM OIS WR · 600 mm · f/8.0 I fired off a few shots before it flew away. The photographs are not as sharp as I would have liked, and the reason is straightforward: in my rush, I forgot to engage the OIS. Excitement and careful technique do not always sit well together. This is only my second sighting of a Cooper’s Hawk (_Astur cooperii_). My first was last April, on a birding boat trip out of Cape May. According to Cornell’s _Birds of the World_ , Cooper’s Hawk has been colonising suburban and urban landscapes since the 1970s, and is now likely the most common backyard breeding raptor across North America. That fact still surprises me a little. A bird this sharp and alert, hiding in plain sight in the ordinary trees across the road. ### Like this: Like Loading...

I had just brushed excess fur from our husky (who could shed another entire dog's worth of hair at any given moment) and left it in our yard. Immediately, sparrows began to pick up the hair and carry it back to bird boxes for their nests.

Towhees are common here in middle Tennessee, and I admire the fact that they aren't interested in the various foods we put out for birds, preferring to find their own. I've noticed that they often scratch around in the grass below feeders, because grub worms are attracted to the dirt that's often covered with discarded sunflower seeds. Towhees are difficult to to get in perfect exposure because of the sharp contrast between their black heads and white chests. One of my favorite birds to observe!

This Cooper's hawk had landed on a tomato stake, then hopped down to march around beneath the plants in our garden. Smaller birds like sparrows and wrens often take "dust baths" in the dried dirt of the garden, and that might have been what drew the hawk to ground level.

Mama robin collecting earthworms for her babies. You know those birds would prefer to swallow their catch, but that maternal instinct to feed their young prevails. We have robins year 'round here in middle TN, but twice a year migrating flocks of them will litter the ground in search of worms and insects. Occasionally we'll see robins eating mealworms that we put out for bluebirds. But it's rare to see a robin at one of our feeders, unless they're being territorial to keep other birds away.

Bird of the Day theme is "grounded" or alt theme "silhouette", so here's a silhouette of a sparrow with husky fur in its beak, along with a towhee, a Cooper's hawk, and a robin on the ground. The hawk was patrolling our garden.

A medium-small gray hawk with a russet chest and legs, white-ish face, striped under wings and thin yellow legs crouches over a furry something beneath it. The hawks wings are half spread to keep other hunters from snatching its prize.

The image captures a Cooper's Hawk given its plumage, perched on a thick, gnarled tree branch. The hawk is positioned in the center-right of the frame, with its body angled away from the viewer but its head turned to look directly at the camera. Its eye is a striking yellow-orange, sharp and alert, conveying a sense of intelligence and predatory focus. The bird's feathers are predominantly white on its underside, transitioning to a brown and white striped pattern on its back and wings, with darker barred markings on its tail feathers, which are partially visible. Its talons, a pale yellow, grip the rough bark of the branch.

The image features a single hawk perched on a dark, thin branch. The hawk is facing away from the viewer, looking over its left shoulder with an intense gaze. Its feathers are a mix of dark grays, browns, and whites, intricately patterned, particularly on its back where the feathers overlap in a scale-like fashion. The underside of its neck and chest are lighter, with fine streaking. The hawk's sharp, hooked beak is visible, as is its dark, round eye with a lighter iris. Its talons are firmly gripping the branch. The tail feathers are long and banded with darker gray and white stripes, ending in a lighter fringe. The branch it is perched on is rough and dark, with some texture visible.
