The elusive #Burchells #Coucal. I swear they have eyes in the back of their head. Photographed through dusty windows and flyscreen. There are at least two around, one roosting un the curry tree at the back door. Posing for me: forget!

1.
White-browed coucal: hunts lizards, not humans. Builds, not borrows.
2.
Coucal facts: deadly to frogs, harmless to you. Not a nest thief.

3.
Sharp beak, soft heart (unless you’re a gecko). #Coucal
4.
Predator, not a parasite. The white-browed coucal keeps it classy.

Pheasant coucal in flight, flying left to right, wings on a downbeat and partly backlit by the sun. The coucal is actually a species of cuckoo, a large, heavy-set bird with patterned brown plumage and a long tail, more comfortable on the ground.

White-browed Coucal. When I first spotted this bird I thought it was a bird of prey, it is actually a member of the Cuckoo family. Unlike its relations it builds its own nest and tends to its young. I love the striking red eye. #kenya #coucal #birds #nature

Here's a Greater #Coucal (a non-parasitic #cuckoo) seen in NW #Bengaluru this morning—gorgeous, stealthy #birds believed to be a sign of good luck (although I've heard #Kannada stories of its owl-like hoot being a bad omen). Fun fact: they are monogamous & courtship occurs during the monsoon! 🪶
