Crown shyness, or canopy shyness.
Coast Live Oaks, mature, winter.
Thought to be a cooperative strategy by close-growing trees within a forest.

SciArt September-Day 2: Canopy (Lands prompt.) This made me think of trees and the phenomenon of crown shyness. Some trees will allow a gap around their crown, keeping it from touching nearby trees. This may be to allow light through to the forest floor. 🌳🐡#sciartseptember2025 #canopy #crownshyness

Between reaching limbs, the hush is holy...
a reverence for space, for light, for breath
In every pause, a kindness lives...
borne of every creature's death

In this case, the trees infer the regular movement of the passing buses as an indication that they're getting too close to a neighbouring tree and, as a result, restrict their growth it that direction.

You might think they're created by the buses physically damaging the trees as they pass, but I suspect they're actually created by crown shyness, where trees naturally limit their growth so as not the clash with the branches of neighbouring trees.

I love the rectangular shapes in the trees along Great Western Road in Glasgow, like the one in the foreground of this photo, which neatly match the profile of the local double-decker buses.

Under this great green canopy, we can see how the trees live in sync with one another, respectfully giving space, growing within boundaries set to flourish.

This is the most beautiful thing you will see today. #Nature At its most wondrous. This is “crown shyness” a phenomenon where the tops of trees communicate with each other to leave gaps that form channels of air and light. www.instagram.com/reel/DFpXfUW... #GoodNews #EddysGoodNews #CrownShyness

"This rata #forest is the most stunning example of #crownshyness I have ever seen... It’s found on Enderby Island, one of the most remote places on the planet."

This phenomenon occurs when trees’ crowns don't touch, forming a distinct pattern among their canopies.

#CrownShyness is actually a really cool thing #trees do to avoid hindering the growth of their own species. The 'channels' you see b/w the canopies prevents competition and slows the spread of diseases and insects.

Woodland tree canopy - most of the tree branches now bare but a few hazel and alder leaves remain. "Crown shyness" is in evidence - the trees' canopies don't quite touch each other.
