A stained glass window from Norwich made shortly before 1500. It shows a man seated in a chair in front of a fireplace. He is dressed in a long robe, hood, and woolly hat. One of his feet is bare, giving us a glimpse of his stirrup hosen, as he warms it by the fire. Inside the fireplace, a cookpot is suspended by a kettlehook. This is the kind of scenario the above recipes belong in: upper-class, but not festive. They are quotidian foods.
