As we remember all those who bravely took part in the #DDayLandings 81 years ago today, here is a #StainedGlass window commemorating the US Airmen who landed at Sainte-Mère-Église in Normandy.

Well, the #USSR did start out the war by carving up #Poland with the #ThirdReich, so they had quite a bit to make up for, #USA didn't join in until #PearlHarbour, if #UK had lost #BattleofBritain it might have meant the #DDayLandings weren't possible,

Harris Manchester and the Second World War A specialised section of Naval Intelligence, the Inter-Service Topographical Department [ISTD], had been established early in the War and Manchester College soon became its Headquarters. Every available inch of space in the College was taken over by the section.

On the the 80th anniversary of #DDay we've an in-depth account of the work done in the College during WWII. A Dept of Naval Intelligence requisitioned the College & the mapping & planning work done here was critical to the success of the #DDayLandings.

#OTD 1944, the #DDayLandings took place. The Inter-Services Topographic Department was based @HMCOxford, & organised Operation Overlord & other missions; & our Dining Hall was the centre of operations, with Nissen huts in the quads.

#FlashbackFriday to the early part of the 20th Century, when our Arlosh Dining Hall was 1st opened. It looks a little different now! Inbetween times (during WWII) the Hall was used for planning the #DDayLandings.

Born #OTD 1950, HRH The Princess Royal.🎂We were honoured by a visit from Princess Anne in 2014, when she dedicated a plaque to those who'd worked on the #DDayLandings when the College was requisitioned by the Admiralty during WWII; & met supporters of the college.

We are taking part in #OpenDoorsOxford on Sat 14 Sept, 11-4pm! A rare opportunity to visit this late-Victorian Dissenting College. See the Chapel, library, dining hall & gardens, open fully for the 1st time. See where the #DDayLandings were planned, & wonderful #stainedglass.
