This is what pressboard is for, right? #dhtries #letterpreas

I think of data craft in particular as a way to also highlight that what matters isn’t the final product, but rather the process itself—and that there’s a lot of #DHtries in practice that can be better understood with the label craft. However not sure neither

Wrapping up the Information Stewardship Forum at @archive.org we were supposed to make postcards for our future self with event takeaways. I decided to go all in and put a bad doodle on the back in a little act of resistance to AI. #DHmakes #DHtries

Also had a real #DHtries where I engraved a friend's research project logo on a round wood plaque. Backwards (horizontally reflected, whoops), because I'm used to doing that for printing blocks (may still work as one but that wasn't the intent)

This is the sign from the universe I needed to get back to making terrible drawings. They still suck enough that it's not exactly a boost to make one, but I do think they got better when I was trying every day. #DHmakes #DHtries

Adding "What is DH Makes" zine with a companion "Pets of DH Makes" zine to my zine collab proposal idea list, but honestly just a "Fry (Un?)makes" zine would be great (Fry + the #DHtries??)

New dark purple whistles significantly spread apart.

"Trust the slicer," they said. "It'll be fine," they said. Alas, the 246 whistles I babysat all day are a gorgeous and unsplittable solid brick.

This time I'm trying two-color whistles and I say it to children so I'll say it to filament, "Nobody better be touching anyone else!!" #DHmakes #DHtries

A pink, purple, white, and blue striped crochet blanket with bulgey blue parts

This return to crochet is now pretty solidly positioning itself in the Weird Blanket category. The fluffy white yarn was very confusing to read, leading to a LOT of increases that I had to decrease because it was turning into Not Blanket Shape. Also briefly forgot the pattern. 😬 #DHmakes #DHtries

#FiberuaryChallenge Day 17: Project bag. Let's be honest, all my project bags are full of shattered dreams. This is the bag for knitting a blanket for the second-grader. I can't count, the thing is a mess and getting frogged. I also failed at a Pride cardigan I loved recently. #DHmakes #DHtries

This block prints its bamboo grain (had to run to an ACH zoom before I could do a 2nd/3rd laser pass to remove, & some lines were too thin for more passes so needed to edit those out of the cut). Looks neat, even though I would've preferred a cleaner block given this image's detail #DHtries #DHmakes

This was also a #DHtries as when I placed to cut these, the laser wasn't coming out of the laserhead. We cleaned the lenses, recalibrated, restarted the software, etc. but... didn't do that "turn it off & back on again" physically. Turned out unplugging it and re plugging it fixed the issue.

I am deep into my first major "take it apart and fix it" moment with the 3d printer. It's the kind of thing that's always terrified me. But I'm telling myself that I handle small fiddly things all the time with embroidery, knitting, and crochet and screws are no different. #DHmakes #DHtries

Regardless, this 3d printer is an absolute ray of sunshine delight compared to wrangling a knitting machine. Maybe it can shame its yarny cousin into behaving better. #DHmakes #DHtries

I have joined Team Whistle and now I'm learning and failing in all kinds of interesting ways while doing this test print of an elephant. #DHmakes #DHtries

My experiments in joyful pedagogy resume today, my 1st day w a #DigitalHumanities class co-designed w an instructor & centered on learning thru experimentation, discovery, play and #DHtries. We’re gonna start the session w play+reflection & see where that leads. Hoping these will help set the tone

Photo of the results from my first movable type experiment with a new-to-me lasercutter and software: a birch plywood board with horizontally-reflected glyph of "Qu" and letter "e" cut out and nearby, with lines on top and side of each meant to act as lower-than-type-height jigs to help glue letters on mounts correctly. You can see some very thin charred toothpick like sticks that are the remnants of the over-engraved jigs

#DHtries: 1st try at @shane.logoff.website's good type lasercutting idea (combo speed of cutting+engraved jig so can glue letters on typehigh mounts more precisely) foiled by my newness to Penland's lasercutter+software (queued too many engraving passes=engraved away jig) #DHmakes +

For #DHmakes #DHtries, the * on "final" = things I would have done if not rushed: some unstraight lines, got the pomegranate vine pattern to print better (or re-lasercut it deeper). Neon magenta paper I compressed the layout to fit didn't look right, so could have used larger paper w/more space. +

Photo of a letterpress print on yellow paper with layered red orange dark blue inked type forming non-word art. It's a lowercase h that looks like a dog in profile, with the two lower stems being legs seen from the side, and the top left edge of the h slightly serifed in a way that suggests dog nose and ears. An apostrophe has been added in the place a tail would go on a dog. There's also a lowercase t just kind of misplaced half on the dog composition

An apostrophe has been added but missed the place a tail would go on a dog and instead hovers in the air nearby, so is not as readable as a dog tail. There's also a lowercase t overlapping the h on the dog composition closer to how I actually wanted that letter placed

A #DHmakes playing w/letterpress type as non-word art/Druksels (typehound! made of Ts, H, & punctuation) + some #DHtries (homely little dog-ish thing; & an h that looks like a dog when I add a comma-tail; but magnets kept moving, so I didn't get 3 letters all in the right place in any test print)

Lol I made a very happy mistake! I thought I was using a sunburst #quilt pattern. Nope. It's a starburst pattern. So, even better per the final image of the quote! #dhmakes #dhtries #letterpress #textiles

Experiment that didn't work out—I got close to an okay print, but getting each acrylic circle's height not blocking inking of other parts=too fiddly for my interest in how the print looked. Would probably print each circle in a separate pass, or pairs of non adjacent ones if wanted to work #DHtries

#DHtries drawing, calling this one "Sorry About Your Hat". I don't think it's awful, and I even sketched up a little myself reflected in the sunglasses taking the picture, but the hat is just utterly wrong and staring at it more gives me no ideas for what to do about it so that's that. #DHmakes

My girlfriend: You did about a million times better on the cat than on the human.
Me: Seriously? Tbh I thought she looks a little raggedy.
My girlfriend: Well the model is a raggedy ball of ugly. I'm just saying you did a great job drawing the raggedy ball of ugly.
