In the process of putting the Examples page together, I ended up taking a trip down memory lane of projects I'd never written up, like embroidering word occurrences at Lab Day 2024. #DHmakes
If you like data, or making things with textile crafts (sewing, knitting, crochet, weaving, etc.), I've finally written something up about data visualization with textiles. More words coming over the next few months! #DHmakes
A balloon artist with a giant hunky Balloon Jesus on his back, overlooking the skyline of San Francisco. Balloon Jesus's loincloth feels evocative of a Palestinian flag.
Happy Easter from San Francisco, where Balloon Jesus is especially buff this year. #DHmakes
I like how these combine fun, food, experimental printing, & potential for antifascist text ⬆️ If anyone in #DHmakes wants to join in May 2nd using your own non-print (or print!) method, please do! (It's Print Day as the motivator, but just all sharing a little art/craft on a theme is my real hope)
A good thread with some reminders about how even "simple" articles of clothing are (still!) made by people, and LLMs are not like sewing machines. #DHmakes
1st Saturday in May is an annual, international Print Day where folks share (art) printing work on social media. I'll be printing+tweeting (maybe extra process photos throughout?); if other folks want to print & share that day, that'd be fun! (May we could do a mailed print swap after?) #DHmakes
A rainbow and trans pride flag yarn cardigan in progress, along with a water bottle full of coffee, and a public outdoor pool in the background
It's a beautiful Saturday for knitting a Pride cardigan at the pool. #DHmakes

Photo of a large (~13x19") wood board that's had multicolor acrylic triangles glued in a border around its edges, with the center empty; some penciled guidelines are visible on the wood. In the middle of the board is a clear plate holding 6 sad-looking bagel-bite puzzas, their cheese still basically cubiform and unmelted.
Closeup photo across the printing board. Part of a large (~13x19") wood board that's had neon translucent multicolor acrylic triangles glued in a border around its edges, with the center empty; some penciled guidelines are visible on the wood.
Photo from last August of a piece of cardboard glued with a thinner border of similar triangles, this time made from craft foam. They've been raised type high on a wood board on a printing press, and inked in a gradient of orange and bright yellow.
Photo of a print made from the craft foam border: white paper with gradient yellow to dayglo orange triangles around the edges. There is also a faint dotted-grud pattern in orange, from a separate printing pass using anti-bird netting mounted type high.
Still life with sad bagel bites & happy letterpress party board 🎉 (I lasercut the acrylic triangles in the fall, but didn't glue them on until today). It's a more reusable version of a background printing thing I made from craft foam last fall (photos 3-4). #DHmakes
Anyone in need of stitch markers for their knitting? 😍 🐝 #DHmakes

It was a good day at YarnLab with a new loom joining the family. Hideo Mabuchi's AVL CompuDobby loom will be joining the YarnLab jack loom for use in his weaving class this spring and beyond. #DHmakes
"Something dumb that also took a lot of time" is such a relatable tale. Especially with a subtext of "nevertheless it brings me joy". #DHmakes 💖 🦆
So here I am, experimenting with layouts, photos, and designs… and also thinking through what happens if I can’t use these images in the final piece. #DHMakes
Lately I’ve been working on the legend design for my String Data Art piece on Las Golondrinas. The idea is to create colored panels featuring the artists’ photos. Thinking of the legend not just as a key, but as part of the visual narrative. #DhMakes

A great example of sports data visualization with textiles! ⚾ 🧢 #DHmakes

Student: I might want to be a sheep farmer someday.
Me: Oh, I know an academic sheep farmer, let me introduce you to @aearhart.bsky.social.
And that's how I started planning a #DHmakes + sheep Zoom event.
Blue, green, and black wool spun and plied
I was hanging out in YarnLab yesterday and one of my Data Visualization with Textiles students came by and spun the plied some of @thalassalib.bsky.social donated fiber to try out the espinner and we chatted for a while about sewing your own clothes. It was a good day. #DHmakes
While not technically a #DHbakes, I'm gonna say that gelatinous edible(🤔🤨) BookFish is very emphatically #DHmakes. Read the whole thread for some culinary book history joy! 📖🐟
Had fun learning some new tools at the makerspace! Channeling #DHMakes to try out knitted data pieces... maybe a World Cup themed project this summer?
Printed the big broken text in Jan; to finish printing small text only in bits of whitespace, cut out empty space on a test print=>upside down on press, 🧲'd cutouts in place, removed rest; blocked around those & filled w/type. Running short of letters limited/decided wording many times #DHmakes
Embroidered Zs in various shades of blue and teal stitched in a spiral pattern on black fabric. The fabric is patterned with gold stars and dots circled by gold swirls in various sizes. A mix of orange, pink, copper, and mauve beads are stitched into many of the Zs
Spent my day off catching up on my sleep/insomnia visualization/physicalization. Here’s every night since the beginning of the year (1 night = 1 Z). Thread colors represent the amount of sleep & beads represent different types of wakefulness. #DHmakes
First attempt at the entire form. Lots of adjustments ahead, then make-ready, but looking promising! #letterpress #dhmakes
"Amazing Anaglyphs: Letterpress Printing in 3D-
Henningsen will discuss the history of anaglyphs, a form of stereoscopic 3D imaging, and demonstrate how to letterpress print 3D anaglyphs. Participants will have an opportunity to print their own anaglyph poster." This sounds amazing! #DHMakes
