Excerpt from the article by Baghdadi & Morgan entitled "Diagnostic tests should be assessed for clinical impact." Broadly, diagnostic stewardship seeks to match the right test to the right patient at the right time for the right action, which requires a comprehensive understanding of how a test functions in real-world patient care [2]. In infectious diseases, the implicit focus is on how tests can be implemented to improve antibiotic use. Evidence is needed to inform (1) which test to use, (2) which patients will benefit from testing, (3) when testing should be performed, (4) what action testing will lead to, and above all else, (5) how testing will impact the patient’s clinical outcome. Studies intended to evaluate test accuracy or performance should be designed to address these questions.
