A large ‘Hoodwinker’ Sunfish/Mola tecta lies washed up on Doran beach on the Sonoma coast. Its mouth is in the lower right and its tail fins are in the upper left. Its coloring appears light grey, but the fish also has a lot of grey sand on it. Two seagulls are picking tentatively at the tail end
Another photo of the fish, this time the gulls are squabbling over something or other. Three more tranquil gulls stand in the background, no doubt thinking “Hey guys, it looks like a pretty big fish.” One gull is missing a foot (fishing line) but is the most aggressive and combative when it comes to the fish
Last weekend a Hoodwinker Sunfish/Mola tecta washed up on Doran beach. Rare in these parts, apparently. Taken Tuesday and it hadn’t started to stink yet. When a couple birds landed on it, it looked kinda springy. So it’s gotta be getting ripe by now.
