Thoughts on Dove Cottage
The front door, steps us into another world,
quaint resistance to creeping modernity.
Here at this table his poems unfurled,
legacy preserved in eternity.
These few fragile trappings of a life adorn,
fill this sketch of his words to him discern
and drawing in tourists now, by the swarm.
New museum to teach, old cottage to learn.
Stern resistance to this world evolved,
absent, noisy steam train passing the door,
now the road, to ease traffic flow, displaced.
Time hasn’t ever any problem solved,
with the roar of traffic along the shore,
just maybe his strong legacy misplaced.

Wordsworth: Nature and Wellbeing Recently I led a small on-line discussion group about Wordsworth. I do not pretend to be a scholar of the subject, but my notes might be...

One blog-post is notes I made for an on-line discussion of Wordsworth. It should interest all students and maybe teachers. Goes well beyond what "everybody knows".

An oil painting of William Wordsworth's dog, Pepper. Unknown artist, oil on canvas, circa 1806-1820.
Features a brown dog with lopsided ears, sturdy legs and a quizzical expression. The dog was given to Wordsworth when Sir Walter Scott came to visit (apparently, Scott was in the habit of bestowing puppies upon friends regularly). Wordsworth and his family must have loved the little critter very much to have had its portrait done.
Many moons ago, I worked at the Dove Cottage giving tours and spent a lot of time with this painting.
