Fresh from my talk at the British Lichen Society AGM in Carlisle; a short trip over to Keswick to see Castlerigg Stone Circle. A light shower meant the lichens got a glow up, with the Rhizocarpon Geographicum (Map Lichens) present truly luminous!

The sky takes up the top two thirds of the frame. The bottom third is the stone circle and above it mountains. The sky is luminescent cloud, lit by the rising sun from behind, almost what I would call a mackerel sky, I’m not sure if that’s the right description.

Castlerigg Stone Circle in the Lake District, photographed using a 1953 Elioflex camera. The site probably served a religious and social function - a high place to be nearer to the old gods perhaps, and also close to a neolithic axe factory.

Yesterday morning I had a trip out to Castlerigg stone circle for sunrise, which is probably my favourite time of the day to enjoy some peace and solitude.

‘Druidical Circle’
Dating from around 3000 BC, Castlerigg stone circle is a Neolithic site containing 38 stones. The exact number of stones seems to have varied over time — the National Trust simply state that there are over 38 stones.
