He's basically a feathered emergency beacon, a flashy, non-migratory diva who doesn't even dull his plumage in winter. He's so red, he makes a stop sign look subtle. Perched in the gloom of the bare branches, he's less of a stealthy woodland creature and more like the only lit Christmas ornament left on the tree after the power went out. You can almost hear him thinking, "Darkness? I am the light source!" His vibrant color, which he gets from his diet of seeds and berries, ensures he's always the star of the show, even when the show is just sitting on a stick in the middle of the night.
