New NASA sensor goes hunting for critical minerals Cradled in the nose of a high-altitude research airplane, a new NASA sensor has taken to the skies to help geoscientists map rocks hosting lithium and other critical minerals on Earth's surface some 60,000 feet below. In collaboration with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the flights are part of the largest airborne campaign of its kind in the country's history.

NASA's ready-to-use dataset details land motion across North America NASA is collaborating with the Alaska Satellite Facility in Fairbanks to create a powerful, web-based tool that will show the movement of land across North America down to less than an inch. The online portal and its underlying dataset unlock a trove of satellite radar measurements that can help anyone identify where and by how much the land beneath their feet may be moving—whether from earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, or the extraction of underground natural resources such as groundwater.

Landsat 8 and Landsat 9 kicked off 2025 by acquiring over 1,400 scenes on the first of January. This Landsat 9 image of Emi Koussi in the Tibesti Range of Chad is a mosaic of two of the many scenes collected. Emi Koussi is an extinct shield volcano that rises to 11,204 feet (3,415 meters) above sea level, making it the highest summit in Chad and the Sahara Desert. Two nested calderas form a large, deep depression that is bounded by a distinct rim. The smaller and younger Era Kohor (Trou au Natron du Koussi) caldera is roughly 1.2 miles (2 km) wide and 1,150 feet (350 m) deep.
