#OTD On March 12, 1579, the Siege of Maastricht began during the Eighty Years' War. Spanish forces led by the Duke of Parma besieged the city for 111 days. The battle ended with the breach of the walls and a massacre that devastated the city's population.

In a process paralleling the #PeaceOfWestphalia, a bedrock of state sovereignty, the #PeaceOfMünster was signed #ThisDayInHistory in 1648. (I lectured on it this week, funnily enough.) This treaty ended the #EightyYearsWar, as #Spain recognized independence of the #Netherlands.

Starting on #ThisDayInHistory in 1576, during the #EightyYearsWar, Spanish forces committed major atrocities in the Sack of #Antwerp. The events, sometimes called the #SpanishFury, may have resulted in about 18,000 civilian deaths over three days, galvanizing Dutch resistance.
